How to Make the Most of Lord Howe Island Holidays With Family

Published 20th Jan 2023

Lord Howe Island holidays are the perfect choice for families of all ages. This small island paradise is jam-packed with adventure and activities for every age! From kayaking to hiking, snorkelling to bird watching, there are so many ways for your family to enjoy a Lord Howe Island holiday. One of Spacifica’s travel experts, Jacqui, recently had the opportunity to experience a Lord Howe Island holiday, planning a fantastic short stay that was perfectly suited for her family.

Making our way there

From the moment we stepped on board our direct flight from the Gold Coast, we were in holiday mode! Eastern Air Services was perfect for our small family of three. EAS are a small aircraft and locally Australian owned business. At first I was wondering how this small 9 seater plane could possibly feel safe, but without a doubt it was the best flying experience I have maybe ever had!

Boarding was based at Platinum Business Aviation, down the road from the Gold Coast airport, where some celebs have their private aircraft! I felt like a VIP! The staff are so helpful and considerate, and it was so relaxing to not be inside a big airport.

The Aircraft is small – there are five steps you must climb up to enter the plane, however seating is 1 and 1 – meaning everyone gets a window and an aisle seat! Such a fun and unique experience for our family.

Once there – then what?

We had been to Lord Howe Island before, just as a couple. This time we brought our four year old child.

This meant we needed to change the way we travelled pretty extensively. We had done luxury in the past, however this time we opted for apartment style at the Milky Way Villas. This allowed us plenty of room to move, with direct beach access and the comforts of home with our own kitchen and separate bedrooms.

We had done the Mt Gower trek last time when we were very fit, and would have loved to have done another challenge again, however short legs wouldn’t make huge distance, so we asked around for some family friendly outdoor activities and weren’t disappointed!

We are very keen bushwalkers, so we opted for a shorter trek. This time we did the Northern Hills Trek and the Transit Hill Trek. Each medium difficulty, and just 3km in distance so we could manage without too much complaining.

So much to do

As our accommodation was right by Old Settlement Beach, this was the obvious choice for afternoon swims and beach walks. We did venture to Ned’s Beach and paid for some reef fish safe food provided by a dispenser, and we all enjoyed an afternoon of fish feeding and watching the myriad of fish surrounding us. This was such a unique experience for the three of us!

Our third day on Lord Howe Island we were lucky enough to have the bluest sky and calm water. We decided to hire some kayaks and snorkelling gear for the morning. I’ve always thought the best way to experience an island is from the water. The island is very easy to paddle around (even with a small child) and we felt so comfortable and safe putting snorkelling gear on and jumping into the azure blue water.

Our final day was spent bird watching along the coastline. Many endemic birds call Lord Howe Island home, and we were lucky enough to spot some.

This was such a magical moment for our family, we couldn’t recommend Lord Howe Island enough for couples, families, friends or even solo!
