Vanuatu Holidays- Things to do in Efate

Published 13th Jul 2020

Stretching across 1300 kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean are the archipelago of 83 islands that make up the Republic of Vanuatu. There are 3 islands that are the most commonly visited, including the main island of Efate, home to the capital Port Vila. Situated a short 2.5 hours flight east of Brisbane, this volcanic and mountainous region is renowned for its stunning natural rainforest, white sandy beaches, crystal blue lagoons and friendly and welcoming locals.

Set around a naturally formed harbour, Port Vila is conveniently located only 10 minutes from the airport.  This multicultural outdoor and pedestrian friendly township offers visitors numerous options of gourmet delights with many outdoor cafes, restaurants, pubs, casinos and nightclubs to enjoy.  There are also a plethora of hotel resorts and self contained accommodation options to suit families, couples and those seeking absolute exclusive, waterfront luxury retreats.

Enjoy the watersports, swimming pools and cultural activities available at a selection of resorts around Port Vila.  The Warwick Le Lagon is a full service resort with a 12 hole golf course, day spa, tennis court and kids club.  The Holiday Inn features overwater villas and offers all inclusive meal packages, whilst the Iririki Island Resort is a private island only a short 3 minute ferry ride from Port Vila with on-site Casino.

If you are keen to head outside your fun filled resort and spend some time discovering Vanuatu, there are so many wonderful things to do in Efate.

Club Hippique Adventure Park

A short 10 minute drive from Port Vila, this adventure park consists of 500 acres of rainforests, waterfalls, and white sandy beaches to experience from horseback.  There are a number of tours available to suit beginners through to experienced riders. Select a half day or full day tour on Erakor Beach, journey through the rainforests, swim with your horse in the salt water lagoon, or take in a trek through the countryside for a dip in the cascade pools.

Head Off Road

Join an expert local tour guide on an off-road buggy. Drive solo or go tandem through the jungles, discovering the villages along the way before stopping for a swim and snorkel. Or choose to visit the Nawie Beach Turtle Sanctuary.  A valid drivers licence is required.

Send a Postcard from Underwater

Located within the marine sanctuary at Hideaway Island, snorkellers and divers are able to post waterproof postcards 3 metres under the water.  A special flag is raised on a float above the postbox when there are postal workers in the water, however the opening hours are also posted at the beach.  Opened in 2003, this is the world’s only underwater post office.  A truly unique and amazing experience. You might even spot Nemo! Take a day trip or stay at the Hideaway Island Resort to enjoy even more amazing underwater and above water activities.

Mele Cascades Waterfall

A stunning and picturesque waterfall a mere 15 minutes from the township of Port Vila. Take a guided tour through the lush rainforest, however be prepared for the somewhat strenuous climb to the top. Relax and enjoy the scenery or jump, slide or swim in the natural rock pools.  Your guided tour will include transfers, a knowledgeable and experienced local guide as well as the admission fees.

The Blue Lagoon

Vanuatu is home to a number of extraordinary blue holes.  A little bit further afield from Port Vila but definitely worth the drive, is this stunning natural swimming hole. With warm, turquoise spring water, this is a must do for all visitors to Efate. Easily accessible for all ages, you can swim, swing from rope swings or simply sit and enjoy mother nature.

Dive the Wrecks around Efate

Vanuatu is a diver’s paradise, offering coral reefs teeming with an abundance of marine life, underwater caves and a number of wrecks to discover.  PADI certified operators provide unforgettable dive tours for beginners through to experienced divers. There are many fascinating dive wrecks to explore from Efate, including the the MC Semle Pederson, a cargo trading vessel which now forms an artificial reef, the MV Konanda and the Star of Russia.  There aren’t too many experienced divers who have the opportunity to dive a seaplane wreck. Coming aground on the reef during takeoff in 1951, this S26 Sandringham flying boat is still mostly intact.
