Suggested Itinerary*:
The East Coast of Grande Terre (mainland) is a vast contrast to the west coast. Drive along the coastline amongst lush vegetation, surrounded by the famous rock formations – a region steeped in tradition and culture.
Day 1:
Arrival in Nouméa, depending on flight arrival time, time for city centre visits. Overnight at Nouvata Hotel, Noumea.
Day 2:
Head to Pouembout for a short hike on Plateau de Tia to enjoy a panoramic view over the area and ocean. Then visit the Cultural Centre of Pomemie near Koné (Kanak exhibits). Visit the Twaé Corridor, a rock formation dug by water and at the end of which flows a waterfall. Overnight at Tieti Hotel, Poindimie.
Day 3:
Today head out on the short drive to Hienghene. Stop along the Linderalic Rocks in Hienghène, walk on the “500 francs bill” beach (this beach used to be on the caledonian 500 francs bill), reach the viewpoint over the Sphynx and Hen (rocks in front of the Bay), and visit the Cultural Centre of Hienghène. Overnight at Koulnoue Hotel, Hienghene.
Day 4:
Head north to take the last ferry-boat of New Caledonia joining the road between Hienghène and the north of the mainland. There are two waterfalls along the way: Cascade de Tao & Cascade Colnett. You could stop at Association Djowero to learn how to carve mountain rocks. Visit the St Denis church, the first catholic church of New Caledonia. Overnight at Koulnoue Hotel, Hienghene.
Day 5 & 6:
Return to Nouméa and enjoy your last two days to visit its bays, city centre, cultural centre. Overnight at Nouvata Hotel, Noumea.
