Australia's best kept travel secret: The hidden gems of Norfolk Island

Published 7th Sep 2023

I used to think of Norfolk Island as a place favoured by the older generation, but as I discovered it's transformed into a haven of excitement, culinary delights, and endless adventures! On the same latitude as Byron Bay (and with a vibe of Byron say 30 years ago), It’s the closest South Pacific destination to Australia. Norfolk has become the ultimate South Pacific Island getaway for families, couples, friends, or even solo adventurers. All you need is your trusty driver's license for airport identification, and you're off to this captivating paradise!

Let me tell you, Norfolk Island has it all. Centuries of history, vibrant culture, a unique language, and mouthwatering cuisine, mingle with stunning beaches, lush gardens, majestic mountains, and exhilarating hikes. But whether it's your very first visit or your tenth, there are some hidden gems on this island that you simply cannot miss.

Before we dive into Norfolk Island's best-kept secrets, I highly recommend you take advantage of the complimentary car rental included in all our Norfolk Island packages. Even though the island is a mere 8km by 5km in size, there's a winding 196km of scenic roadways to explore throughout this secluded slice of paradise!

So, when you're crafting your dream Norfolk Island adventure, trust me you need to add these to your must-visit list:

Bumboras Beach

Picture this: a tucked-away gem on the southern tip of the island, Bumboras Beach awaits surfers and sunrise enthusiasts alike. Grab a steaming hot coffee, spread out your picnic rug, and snuggle up in a cosy blanket as you soak in the morning's first light- you might be lucky enough to witness a cotton candy-coloured sunrise as I did. And for the surfers out there, Bumboras has one of the island's best breaks

Castaway Brewery

Venture to one of the most remote breweries in the South Pacific, Castaway Brewery, renowned for its award-winning cider. Friday nights are the prime time to be here, as you can savour your beer or cider with their famous wood-fired pizzas (be sure to make a reservation).

Two Chimneys Winery

On the eastern side of the island, nestled at Steel's Point, you'll find the charming Two Chimneys Winery. This boutique vineyard and winery offer a delightful selection of local premium and vintage wines, perfectly complemented by locally crafted delicacies. Be sure to drop in to this Hall of Fame award-winning winery during your island adventure.

Philip Island

While many visitors to Norfolk Island don't seize the opportunity, I highly recommend taking a short boat ride across to the uninhabited Phillip Island. Its reddish-brown earthy Mars-like terrain presents a striking contrast to Norfolk Island's lush tropical vibe. Birdwatchers, in particular, will be in paradise here, as it serves as a critical breeding site for 12 species of seabirds, including the Sooty Tern, known locally as the Whale Bird.

Underwater Adventures

One of the coolest things I did while in Norfolk was going for a scuba dive. The water is crystal clear meaning great visibility, and I got to explore coral-covered pinnacles, caves, and incredible rock formations. The marine life is abundant, and you will see many tropical species- I even spotted a turtle. I would highly recommend a snorkel in Slaughter Bay or Emily Bay and do not miss out on a visit to Crystal Pools- a natural ocean water pool.

Horse and Carriage High Tea

If you're searching for an extra special experience to elevate your already incredible Norfolk Island getaway, look no further. Picture yourself on a magical Clydesdale horse and carriage ride, winding past colossal Moreton Bay Figs and through the enchanting Hundred Acres Reserve. Your journey culminates in a delectable homemade high tea back at the stable. This enchanting experience is available daily at 2pm, but be sure to book ahead due to limited availability.
