Discover the Solomon Islands

Published 28th Aug 2018

There is something enchanting about visiting a place that feels almost untouched - the Solomon Islands is one of those destinations! Enjoy a raw and authentic South Pacific holiday, surrounded by unspoilt azure lagoons, beaches without crowds, traditional cuisine and the uncomplicated warmth of friendly locals.

Solomon Is. History

The Solomon Islands are famous for the geographical significance they had in World War II as well as the battles that took place there, specifically the Battle at Guadalcanal. Fought between 7 August 1942 and 9 February 1943, this was the allies’ first offensive move against Japan which many believe was the ‘beginning of the end’ of WWII.

For history buffs, the destination offers a very unique holiday experience; there are museums & memorials dedicated to WWII with expert guides who can expand your knowledge. There are also a vast number of remnants which sit almost untouched since the 1940’s, some still hidden in thick jungle or underground, having never been recovered.  Not all the relics are on land of course, a few are close enough to shore that they can be seen with just a snorkel & mask, and the rest are only able to be explored up-close by experienced divers.

Solomon Is. Adventure

These rugged and untamed islands are perfectly suited to the adventure traveller. Diving, hiking, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing and surfing are just a few of the popular activities available to enjoy. Whether it’s the thrill of exploring, learning about ancient hillforts in the mountains, or seeing skull shrines and other sites of times past, there is never a lack of excitement on your Solomon Islands holiday.

Uepi Island Resort, located in the picturesque Marovo Lagoon, offers all meals as a part of your booking and is well known by divers and snorkelers – but there are plenty of other amazing tours and activities directly from the resort too. Another great option is Agnes Gateway Hotel, known for amazing fishing and diving; to make everything really easy - the hotel has a tour operator and dive centre on site! Conveniently located minutes from Munda Airport, on the shores of the pristine Roviana Lagoon, Agnes Gateway Hotel is only 15 minutes from the very popular Skull Island and also offers easy access to the WWII Museum.

Solomon Is. Romance

Looking for a romantic escape or honeymoon that is a bit different? Enjoy naturally beautiful surroundings, stunning sunsets and secluded beaches, disconnect from reality and feel the romance in the air! Tavanipupu Island Resort is the perfect place to escape with your special someone. Located in Marau on an old coconut plantation, the resort offers understated Solomon Island style luxury. Wine, dine and take solace in once another’s company, doing as much or as little as you please. Prince William and Kate stayed here in 2012 while visiting the country, so it is safe to say that this island retreat is fit for a (future) king!
