Whether you’re thinking planning a Norfolk Island holiday, considering travel to Fiji, or have a Cook Islands holiday escape planned – keep reading to learn about some of the best fishing spots the South Pacific has to offer!

Fiji Fishing Holidays

Fiji is home to some of the big guys. I personally had a Sailfish break my line (as good as catching the fastest fish in the sea right? Right!?)

Fijian waters commonly see Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Reef Fish such as Coral Trout, Red snapper & Trevally. There are many companies who depart from either Denarau Port, major hotel jetties and from the outer Islands. Spacifica Travel can assist in finding the right fishing charter or day trip for you on your next Fiji holiday.

Note many hotels accept legally caught fish from the charter and will often cook the fish for you in their hotel restaurants. Simply advise your hotel when you are heading out fishing and they will advise your options. Check out some of our Fiji holiday packages for more information.

The Cook Islands

With similar waters to Fiji, the sea life is incredibly abundant in The Cook Islands. In Rarotonga, the Capital of the Cook Islands, the reef shelf drops incredibly close to shore.

You cannot eat the reef fish from Rarotonga, however there is an abundance of large gamefish close by. Chartered boats do not venture further than 10 nautical miles from shore – that is very close!

You will find some whopping Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo & Mahi-Mahi caught regularly.

There are a handful of companies who operate from the main town jetty in Avarua, be sure to check with Spacifica Travel and book early to avoid missing out this once in a lifetime fishing experience. Browse our Cook Islands holiday packages for more information.

Norfolk Island

Coming a little close to home, you’ll find the landscape, ocean temperatures and sealife have changed.

Norfolk Island is surrounded by rocky reef and deep waters, making it the perfect place for marine life who find sanctuary in the hidden underwater caves and coral life.

The most popular fish by far in Norfolk is the Trumpet Emperor, more commonly named “Trumpeter” or Sweetlip. This fish can be found close to shore around Norfolk Island due to the closeness of the reef, and is served almost everywhere on-island as an option, a local favourite this fish is abundant and delicious. Other commonly caught fish are Kingfish, Snapper & Tuna. Oysters can also be found close to shore.

Norfolk Island has fishing charter companies who are more than willing to share their knowledge of the local waters and the best time of year for anything you’re hoping to catch!
