The Ultimate Beach Holiday: Why Explore the Cook Islands

Published 15th Sep 2023

Are you on the lookout for the ultimate beach holiday? Then you will find plenty to love in the magical shorelines of the Cook Islands. From breath-taking secluded beaches, to sweeping seaside wonders, a Cook Islands holiday won’t disappoint if you are seeking that sand-under-your-feet, sea breeze in your hair bliss.

Spacifica Travel are well aware of how special the beaches of the Cook Islands are, so we would love to share some of our favourites with you. No Cook Islands travel itinerary is complete without at least some of these iconic beaches featuring high up on the list.

Our Favourite Cook Islands Beaches

The Cook Islands and beaches go as well together as Australia and Vegemite, and there are no shortage of striking beaches to choose from when you travel to these idyllic South Pacific islands. While it is difficult to narrow down the best of the best, we believe these beaches earn the label “must-visit” if you are travelling to the Cook Islands.

Muri Beach

The world renowned Muri Beach runs along the south-east corner of Rarotonga and is home to a string of some of the island’s most luxurious resorts. Even if you aren’t staying directly on Muri Beach, it is still worth paying it a visit as it encapsulates everything that makes the Cook Islands so beloved. White sands, aqua waters, all framed by a row of palm trees and the striking Oneroa, Koromin, and Taakoka islands just off the coast.

Aroa Beach and Lagoon Marine Reserve

Cook Islands holidays aren’t complete without going snorkelling, and you won’t find a better spot than the Aroa Beach and Lagoon Marine Reserve on the south-west coast of Rarotonga. The lagoon off the coast of Aroa Beach is shallow and completely protected from the surf, making it the ideal place for snorkelers of all skill levels to immerse themselves in the vibrant underwater world. Getting up close to the colourful coral and marine life will be an experience that stays with you for a lifetime.

One Foot Island

If you are looking for a Cook Islands beach that truly feels like a slice of paradise, then One Foot Island is as ethereal as they come. Situated to the south-east of Aitutaki, One Foot Island is a small islet surrounded by a striking beach that hasn’t lost an ounce of its beauty over the years. It is well worth catching a boat out to One Foot Island, so you can soak in its romantic atmosphere, relax on its soft sands, and go for a swim in its crystal clear waters.

The Best Time to Visit the Cook Islands for Your Ultimate Beach Holiday

While there is no bad time of the year to visit the Cook Islands, if one of your main reasons to visit is to enjoy the beaches, then some months will be better than others. We recommend you travel to the Cook Islands in April, May, September, or October if you want the ultimate beach holiday. These months generally offer the best beach weather – warm and sunny without as big a risk of a storm hitting, as is the case in the summer months.

It is also worth pointing out that you may spot some humpback whales off the coast of Rarotonga if you visit between July and October. If you want to share your beach experience with these incredible creatures, then make sure you plan your Cook Islands trip around this time of year.
