Things to Do on Norfolk Island

Even so, it might seem overwhelming trying to narrow down what to see and do when planning your Norfolk Island holidays since there are so many options to choose from. Which is why we have put together 5 top things to do on Norfolk Island that are just a little different from the usual offerings.
Drive over the oldest bridge in Australia
Take a drive down to Kingston Town to see the ruins of the old penal settlement and while you cruise along the coastline towards Emily Bay you will have the chance to drive – albeit very slowly – across the oldest bridge in Australia. Built using convict labour it is one of many around Kingston that still remain to this day. The authenticity of the claim may be questioned by some but when you hear the locals speak and listen to the passion of their history you can’t help but believe it to be true.
Become a plane spotter
Watching the flights arrive and depart from Norfolk is a popular local pastime and one you can easily join in with. For the best view of both the planes coming into and taking off from the airport plus panoramic views of the island, head up to Mount Pitt with your camera and some refreshments then sit back, enjoy the views and get caught up in the excitement of plane spotting.
Watch cargo coming onshore
Being an island community one of the only ways to get bulk cargo and large goods onto the island is via cargo ship. These ships come from Australia and New Zealand bearing essentials goods for the people of Norfolk so when they arrive into local waters there is a buzz of anticipation to see what is what offloaded. The process of offloading is a tricky one as there is no pier for the ship to dock at and offload, all offloading is done at sea with goods being craned off the cargo ship into smaller whalers that are then towed to the pier where a crane swings them up onto dock and the awaiting trucks. The entire spectacle is a must see for everyone on the island so make sure you head down to Cascade Pier or Kingston Pier to witness it first hand.
Friday Night is Pizza Night
Every Friday night at Castaway Hotel is Pizza Night. Popular with locals and tourists alike the wood fired pizzas on the menu are a must try for your Friday night dinner. You can choose to dine indoors, all cozied up by the large fireplace, or outdoors on the deck which overlooks the valley and ocean offering up spectacular views that Norfolk is known for. After dinner why not stay a little while longer at the bar talking with the friendly locals who are always keen for a chat!
Take a walk through Norfolk Island National Park & Botanic Garden
With walks ranging from 90m to 1.7kms including wheelchair accessible tracks, there is a walking circuit to suit everyone. Take a stroll through the Botanic Garden observing the local flora and fauna – see if you are lucky to spot the Norfolk Island Green Parrot. Or head down to the coastline and Cooks Monument for breathtaking views of the jagged cliffs and rocky shores. Just don’t forget to take your camera!
