What to Do On Your Cook Islands Family Holiday

Published 30th Dec 2022

We all know the Cook Islands is spectacular, and the local relaxed atmosphere is a haven for new couples to chill out and unwind from the cities, but what is there to do when you are bringing the kids on a Cook Islands family holiday? Suddenly a spa visit or a sleep-in at an Adults only resort are out of the picture.

The best thing about the Cook Islands is that there really is something for everyone! Whether you and the kids love to swim, meet new friends, hike, climb or explore, the Cooks Islands will not disappoint.

How to get there

We are so excited that Jetstar has announced affordable flights twice weekly direct from Sydney starting mid-2023, which is one less thing to worry about! You’ll arrive after a short 5 ½ hour flight on their newest Airbus A321neo, allowing your whole family travelling in comfort into Rarotonga and beyond if you are headed to the islands.

If you are an active family that wants to see all there is to offer, we recommend hiring a car for your holiday – this way you won’t miss out on a thing!

Activities Galore

Bike riding

In the main centre of town, and often at your accommodation venue in Rarotonga, there are push bikes for hire. On sunny days you can ride all the way around the island with stops along the way for swimming, fish and chips, bowling and more! This is a great way to spend the day with kids of all ages. Bikes are a big part of Island life, and arguably the best way to see the island from the ground.

Swimming

When it comes to all of your swimming options you can swim in a pool at your villa or holiday home, but why not venture to any of the amazing beaches surrounding Rarotonga? Muri beach is famous for a hassle free white sand and clear water experience, and for good reason! Kids can run and play all along the beach, with plenty of shady places for parents to sneak in a book to read, or head across the road to any of the local cafes for bakery treats, hot chips or an ice cream!

Beaches in the Cook Islands don’t get overcrowded like most other popular destinations, so you can rest assured you’ll always find somewhere to set up at any of the amazing areas on any of the islands.

Snorkelling

Who doesn’t like snorkelling – and better yet – Sea Turtles! With one of the most amazing lagoons in the world, you can catch a lagoon cruise daily with the family and stop at some picturesque snorkelling stops around the main island of Rarotonga. Make sure to bring sunscreen!

Exploring nature

Another excellent place to swim is Cook Islands only waterfall on Rarotonga! Wigmore’s Waterfall is a short drive inland and a hike through the rainforest before reaching a beautiful waterhole and waterfall. Best reached after some rain, the short hike is great for most fitness types. Make sure to bring your bug spray! Mozzies love waterfalls almost as much as families.

Learning about local culture

With all this fun, let’s not forget the amazing culture that the Cook Islands has still. A great way to immerse your kids in the amazing hospitality and Island life of Rarotonga would be to embark on an Island Progressive Dinner – each course is served at a different home, where you will be greeted by the friendly faces of local Cook Islanders and cooked local food while being told stories of the island and its history.

Some resorts offer dancing and themed nights where local dancers are dressed in traditional attire and present their history through storytelling, a fun filled night for all!

Always be ready to join in, because the most important thing to Cook Islanders is family, and by visiting their island, you become whānau – their extended family.

Markets

On Saturday mornings, the Punanga Nui Market is a must, this is another great way to meet the locals of Rarotonga. A meeting place for artists, chefs, growers and gatherers where you can stock up on fresh fruit and veggies, pareu (sarongs) in all colours and fresh fish.

Where to stay

Depending on the size of your family, the age of the kids and your family needs, there is often an accommodation option to suit all budgets.

The Cook Islands offer resorts (never any chain resorts) villas, homestay or holiday houses, so you can feel right at home from the moment you arrive.

If relaxation and kids clubs are your preferred, you may enjoy the Rarotongan, Te Manava or Nautilus.

Maybe an easy peasy hotel is your style, where you will spend your days swimming and exploring, you might find your dream holiday here.

If you prefer to relax in a holiday home you and the kids can take over, you may prefer a house chosen for you by our team of South Pacific Experts. We’re always here to help you find the best choice for your Cook Islands family holiday.

What to eat

Alright let’s talk about sometimes the hardest part of travelling to suit everyone – the food!

You can check out some of our favourite ways to eat around the Cook Islands, with such a range of fresh produce, there will be something for everyone. We promise!

When travelling as a family sometimes the best experiences come from the least hassle.

There are bakeries and cafes dotted all around the islands providing takeaway sandwiches and treats you can take with you on your adventures. Fish and chips galore of course for lazy beach days, and sashimi for the more adventurous kids.

Banana Poke is loved by all visiting the Cook Islands, a sweet treat of bananas cooked in coconut cream and sugar – this is bound to win over any sweet tooth!

And, who could miss an Umukai! Or “umu” for short, this is similar to the New Zealand Hangi, an underground “oven” filled with firewood and heated stones, this method of cooking produces some of the most tantalising food you will ever eat! Not to mention fun to watch.
