Lord Howe Island is an undisputedly spectacular island off the coast of Australia, being a seasonal destination some things do close over the winter months.  However there are still great reasons to travel over the quieter winter season! The Facts

Lord Howe Island is located 700km northeast of Sydney, parallel to Port Macquarie. The average temperature over winter is 14.7° (low) – 19.8° (high) and the average water temperature is a refreshing 19.9°. The Island has maintained its pristine natural environment through continued community conservation projects. These projects are becoming increasingly popular for tourists to join in on, and a great way to educate people on the islands endemic species, natural surrounds and also any threats to the islands delicate eco-system.

Bird Life

A premier destination for Bird Watching, boasting more than 130 permanent and migratory bird species. Keep an eye out for the endemic Woodhen, a flightless species which was saved from extinction thanks to the efforts of local conservation efforts. If you are visiting Lord Howe Island between March – November take a walk on the Little Island Track to view the aerial courtship displays of the Providence Petrel. This magnificent bird is one of the rarest in the world & returns to the island to nest in the southern mountains each winter.  

Walking Trails

While the island is only 11km long & 2km wide, there are dozens of choices of trails & tracks to explore during your stay on Lord Howe. With options to suit everyone from the novice stroller to the confident mountaineer, hike through lush forest and take in the spectacular views from the many vantage points around the island. Mt Gower is one of the more challenging tracks, taking approximately 8 hours to complete the 14km track it’s considered one of the best day treks in the world and the view from the top is utterly magnificent.

Marine Park

Lord Howe Island is surrounded by approximately 48,000 hectares of Marine Reserve, this protected area is home to the Southernmost Coral Reef in the world. Even though the water temperature is cooler in the winter months, it’s still a highlight to dive into the pristine water and see the diverse underwater world.

Conservation Volunteering

If you are passionate about nature & conservation, you can take park in citizen science programs, listen to talks and lectures and contribute to conservation efforts on the island.
