FAQs

  • What makes a Samoa holiday special?
Nestled in the heart of Polynesia, Samoa encapsulates everything that is great about the region, from awe inspiring terrain to friendly people and an overwhelming feeling of relaxation. Governed by the Fa’a Samoa, or ‘the Samoan way’, these faithful, selfless and charming people value the agai (extended family) over anything else, and all visitors are treated like family.
Spread over several volcanic islands, the two largest being Upolu and Savaii, the largely untouched landscape comprises of everything from lava fields to ocean trenches and lush jungles with every shade of green imaginable.
The pristine coastline, with scattered reef breaks that are home to thousands of marine life species, are lined with thatched shelters known as fales, as well as traditional villages with livestock roaming the streets, smiling children in coconut trees and people playing ‘kilikiti’ or Samoan cricket.
Independent since 1962, Samoa is a safe, stable and strong country that is very proud of its history and culture. The capital Apia reflects this with many monuments and colonial building recognising their past. Furthermore, with tribal influences and family structure playing a major governing role in Samoan society, the core of this nation is as it has been for hundreds of years without the impact of western commercialism or control.
For an authentic south pacific experience, Samoa is the perfect destination for couples, families, solo-travelers and backpackers alike. With over 3000 years of history, unique natural phenomenons and a special type of hospitality not seen anywhere else, Samoa is an incredibly special place that needs to be explored to be believed.
  • What is there to see in Samoa?
Behind the sparkling waters and white sand of sun-soaked tropical beaches, you will find the cool wonders of a rugged rainforest interior, with waterfalls, rivers, caves and blowholes among the attractions for those stepping off the beaten track.
Try a trek such as the challenging two to three days climb of Samoa’s highest peak, Mt Silisili, or opt for a shorter, more relaxed stroll such as the popular Mt Vaea trail outside off Apia, which sees you visiting Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb and admiring stunning views back towards the capital. In Savai’i, hit a natural high on the Falealupo Canopy Walk, towering above the rainforest, and for a unique glimpse of dramatic history, explore the lava fields of Saleaula left after the eruption of Mt Matavanu early in the 20th century which buried five villages. Marvel at the half-buried church, lava patterns and imprints still clearly visible.
Dive into pure refreshment with plenty of falls and swimming options available. With so many to choose from you many need to return to try them all! Our picks on Upolu include Togitogiga, with its multiple pools on the south coast; Papapapaitai Falls on the cross island road; and the refreshing swimming holes and cascading falls at Falefa, Sauniatu and Fuipisia on the east coast road. On less populated Savai’i, plunge into Afu Aau (Olemoe) waterfalls in the south-east and marvel at the spectacular Mu Pagoa falls, plummeting straight into the ocean below.  The blowholes at Alofaaga are yet another must-see, with water surging 30m into the air.
  • What is normal in Samoan culture?
Family, community and church are key pillars of the traditional way of life, “Fa’a Samoa”, a proud Polynesian heritage dating back 3000 years. Visitors are embraced with warm smiles and generous hospitality, and often invited into homes to share a truly authentic taste of daily life with extended families and community members.
With Samoans renowned for vibrant dance, colourful storytelling and a love of singing, a FiaFia night at a resort or the cultural village in Apia is a not-to-be missed, inclusive experience. Be thrilled and charmed by energetic dancing combined with graceful elegance, traditional bright costumes, fire knives and wooden drum beats, capped by a magnificent umu (hot-stone) buffet.
The love of singing often extends to spontaneous, heartfelt welcomes and farewells serenading guests at resorts, where it seems a beautiful voice is as integral to the role as genuine friendliness. Soaring, angelic voices also fill the air during church services on Sundays, a national day of rest.
Most of the population lives in coastal villages and accordingly seafood is the hero dish at feasts and on local menus, ranging from freshly caught yellowfin tuna and mahi through to crayfish and octopus. Tropical fruit also abounds with coconut, mango, banana, pineapple, papaya and star fruit prominent. Smoky, rich, distinctive dishes based on coconut cream emerge from umus, with fish, chicken, pork, bananas, taro and seasonal vegetables wrapped and then covered in coconut or banana leaves and left to slowly cook over hot rocks.
Savour Samoan favourites such as palusami (coconut milk, onion, beef baked inside taro leaves) and oka (fresh raw fish marinated in coconut cream with lime, onion and tomato), along with street foods at the roadside stalls and markets. A village visit may capture an ava (kava) ceremony, volleyball or village cricket game, with Samoans generally good sports in all senses - naturally athletic and skilled in rugby union and league, netball and soccer. Community pride also shines in the annual Miss Samoa contest, with villages decked out to support entrants; and tradition captured in trademark tattoos, which for generations have been a rite of passage or mark of respect.
