A slower South Pacific: why Vanuatu works for couples who want to disconnect

Published 16 Jun 2026

Life is busy, so when the chance comes to get away from it all – really get away – there are few places better to disconnect than Vanuatu.

Here, beaches stretch uninterrupted by high-rises, coastal views remain untouched by mega marinas and intimate accommodation makes it feel as though you’ve stepped into your own private world.

Vanuatu isn’t about ticking off attractions or filling every hour. It’s about stepping away from the noise and rediscovering what it feels like to truly switch off.

For couples seeking a slower kind of South Pacific escape, it offers something increasingly rare – space, stillness and the chance to reconnect with nature, with each other, and with yourself.

A different kind of escape

Across the islands of Vanuatu, skylines are defined not by buildings but by nature – fringed beaches on one side, dense jungle on the other. In between, you’ll find everything from five-star resorts to relaxed beachside bungalows, all designed to let the surroundings take centre stage.

Turn off your alarm and let your body clock adjust to gentle rhythm of breaking waves and sounds of birdcalls. There’s no to-do list here – every day is yours to enjoy however you like.

Swap your morning routine of city commutes and café queues with a quiet cuppa on the balcony overlooking turquoise water, a gentle stroll along the beachfront and tropical breakfast by the pool.

As the day drifts on, the pace slows even further. Sunsets arrive gradually, washing the sky in soft colour as the air cools and the islands settle into evening.

Nights are best kept simple – perhaps a relaxed dinner by the water, the sound of the ocean in the background, and nowhere else to be. No rush, no distractions – just time together.

Reconnect through shared experiences

In Vanuatu, time seems to stretch in the best possible way, giving couples the space to simply be.

Days unfold without schedules or notifications, guided instead by instinct. A spontaneous swim in calm, crystal-clear water. A long, unhurried lunch by the beach. An afternoon spent exploring somewhere new, just because you can.

Dive into the ocean and discover vibrant reefs just beneath the surface or find a quiet stretch of sand and linger a little longer – no crowds, no noise, just the steady rhythm of the sea.

For those drawn to a touch of adventure, there’s plenty to share. Paddle across still lagoons, wander through rainforest trails to hidden waterfalls, or take in sweeping views that remind you just how far removed you are from everyday life.

Find meaning in simplicity

Part of what makes Vanuatu so special is its deep connection to tradition. Life here is guided by kastom – a way of living that values community, culture and a strong connection to the land.

Spend time in a local village and it quickly becomes clear how little is needed to feel content. Conversations replace screens. Stories replace scrolling. And simple, genuine moments become the most memorable part of the day.

It’s not about doing more, but about experiencing things more deeply.

And to truly embrace that, consider taking a break from technology. No camera lens can fully capture Vanuatu’s beauty – so put the phone away and take it in for yourself.

Because long after you’ve returned home, it’s not just the destination that stays with you – it’s the feeling.
