Off-road adventure on Norfolk Island

Much has been written about the many things you can see and do on Norfolk Island, the South Pacific island that may be small in size but big in history.

Traversing the 120km of road by car is easy enough – just remember to give way to the resident livestock and use the “Norfolk Wave” when passing other vehicles – and is without doubt the best way to explore the island’s attractions.

But beyond the bitumen lies another layer of Norfolk magic waiting to be discovered, and all you need is a state-of-the-art 4WD to find it.

4WD touring, Norfolk style

Where better to start than in Norfolk Island National Park, home to some of the island’s most spectacular natural environments including Mount Pitt and Mount Bates, dramatic coastal cliffs and subtropical forest.

From here, your off-road adventure takes you through a private paddock where you’ll pass convict ruins on the way to Watermill Dam – one of the first water storages built on Norfolk Island and used until the walls were breached in the 1930s. Today, the dam is used by local ducks and geese that eagerly greet visitors (especially when they have breadcrumbs to share!).

Nearby the dam lie the ruins of the Old Watermill, once used to power millstones for grinding corn, a staple of the diet of convicts in the early 1840s – a reminder of the darker side of Norfolk Island’s history.

Off the beaten track experiences

During a 4WD tour of Norfolk Island, you’re privy to unique experiences including visiting the home of a local family to share morning or afternoon tea. This immersive experience is as delicious as it is heart-warming and sets the tone for what lies ahead.

Travelling along the cliff edge, you have the box seat to the island’s sea birds nesting in the pines, including the legendary mutton birds. This route leads to Simons Water Reserve – a private property where you will meander through trees and past cattle to the cliff edge to see the sights of Cascade Bay and across to Elephant Rock and The Blowhole.

Cascade Bay is set beneath towering cliffs on the north coast and was once home to a whaling station. Now it’s where Cascade Pier – one of only two piers on the island – is used by fishing boats and supply tenders. Witnessing the arrival of a ship is an experience in itself, with cranes unloading cargo and boats zipping between ship and shore. It’s a completely different experience when the pier is quiet, with waves crashing against the coastal cliffs and seabirds soaring above.

Next stop on the tour is Elephant Rock, a striking, natural sea stack formation located off the rugged north coast and named after its distinct shape which features a trunk formation that appears to dip into the ocean.
