Sustainable Travel Fiji

‘Sustainable’ can sometimes feel like a buzz word that companies throw around to sell more of their products, and with a bit of further research, we often find that what we gained in one area, failed in others.
During the past few years in travel, we have seen a large shift in social conscience, moving away from hard profits no matter the cost, to a more sustainable model with often simple changes to our everyday life. Our team at Spacifica Travel has seen first-hand the impact of tour operators, hotels and airlines realigning their business to a much more planet-friendly, animal-friendly and people-friendly approach!

We are so excited to share with you just some of the many initiatives we have seen happening recently in Fiji, where you can find yourself experiencing all the beauty of Fiji, without the guilt of social conscience.

Soap for Hope

Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa, Shangri La Yanuca Island, Radisson Blu Resort, Namale Resort & Spa, Nanuku Resort and more have collaborated with Fiji Chemical to provide a new home for daily used products in their hotels. One of these initiatives kicked off in October 2022 and is called ‘Soap for Hope’.
Soap for Hope is where Hotels & Resorts keep partially used soap bricks when cleaning rooms, and provide to Fiji Chemical who will sanitize, shave and process down the soap.
The end product is given to local community support initiatives who add essential oils and press into new artisan soap bricks. These soap bricks are then either donated and used in local communities, or sold as a form of income, including a portion sold back to hotels.

Linen For Life

Linen For Life is another fantastic initiative taken on by Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa, Shangri La Yanuca Island, Radisson Blu Resort, Namale Resort & Spa & Nanuku Resort who donate any linen from the hotel which is no longer of hotel standard, yet still of a usable standard.

These fabrics are sent to local initiatives such as the Solo Mums Project, who repurpose the fabrics by using natural dyes and creating school uniforms for children, sleeping bags, Tote bags etc.

Charcoal

A fantastic initiative taken on in which hotels keep used coffee grounds, which are combined with simple household products such as water, shredded paper and corn starch and are then formed into small bricks and used as fire charcoal. A much more sustainable way of creating charcoal by reusing products normally thrown away.

Coral Restoration

Coral planting and restoration initiatives have increased in popularity in recent years, with many hotels and tour operators giving back to the ocean with their efforts to rebuild damaged reef, so that future generations can enjoy the reef as much as we do today.

Nanuku Resort , Cloud 9, Plantation Island, Kokomo Private Island Fiji, Treasure Island Fiji, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort all have initiatives, just to name a few.
With active research and contribution, these places have successfully helped in the restoration of Fiji’s beautiful beloved reefs.

A tree for every take off

Along with modifying the aircraft they fly in order to decrease their impact on the environment, Fiji Airways has committed to a ‘tree for every take off’ in which they have collaborated with The Fijian Department of Forestry and plant a tree for every flight taking off. These are mainly mangroves, which are incredibly important to the life cycle of the Fijian coastline and critically important to fight against greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

With an average of 15,000 mangroves a year – that is a lot of trees!

Sustainable Fiji now – and Beyond

Fiji is doing very well in its sustainability path with big goals for the future!

From 2023 onwards, Fiji has committed to every March 18th - Fiji National Plastics Free Day. A fantastic initiative to reduce the use of plastics across Fiji.
