The art of the overwater bungalow

Published 19 May 2026

If there’s one thing Tahiti is famous for, it’s overwater bungalows.

Blending Polynesian tradition with modern day luxury, the bungalows incorporate the natural surrounds beautifully while providing luxurious comfort – they are often what springs to mind when you think of idyllic tropical escapes.

The very first overwater bungalows were built in The Islands of Tahiti, and they have become a symbol of Polynesian luxury. As well as in Bora Bora, you can find them in Tahiti, Huahine, Taha’a, Rangiroa, Tikehau and Mo’orea.

Polynesians have long used simple wooden huts on stilts as shelters for fishing, but the luxury overnight accommodation that you see today is a modern invention from the 1960s. In fact, the installation of a glass floor panel in early designs was known as a “Tahitian television”.

But not all overwater bungalows are the same, and when travelling to Tahiti the question is not so much about staying in one, but which one. And while they are perfect for a romantic escape, there are overwater bungalows to suit families and small groups as well.

Overwater Bungalows in the Islands of Tahiti

Believe it or not, there are several considerations to factor in when choosing an overwater bungalow – orientation, lagoon depth, privacy and service among the main ones. If you’re lucky enough to be in a position to choose, here’s what to look for.

  • View and location: Select bungalows with, or, without, direct views of Mount Otemanu, or those offering sunrise/sunset views. "End of pontoon" units generally offer the best, most unobstructed views and maximum privacy.

  • Snorkelling access: For the best marine life, look for bungalows near house reefs, such as those in Mo’orea or Taha'a. Some locations have sandy bottoms under the bungalows with less coral, while others are teeming with fish.

  • Amenities: Look for the "Tahitian television" – a glass floor panel to view fish below – spacious private decks, outdoor showers and modern, well-maintained Polynesian decor.

  • Privacy: If privacy is paramount, choose bungalows located further from the main island or at the far end of the pontoon to avoid passing boat tours and neighbours.

  • Budget: Costs vary significantly, with luxury options offering private plunge pools (think Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora) while others provide more budget-friendly options (like Hotel Kia Ora in Rangiroa).

  • Best islands: Bora Bora is famous for its iconic lagoon views, while Mo’orea is known for better, more accessible snorkelling right from the bungalow.

If you want to wake up to the sounds of the ocean and step out onto a private balcony surrounded by nothing but clear turquoise water, the Islands of Tahiti are for you. It really doesn’t matter which island you choose – the overwater bungalow experience will stay with you long after you leave.
