Movies and TV shows filmed in the South Pacific

The South Pacific has played muse for many famous artists, writers, poets and photographers over the centuries, and modern-day film makers and production companies are not immune to its beautiful scenery either. With many reality TV programs, movies and even a few documentaries being filmed in different South Pacific countries, popularity for this region as holiday destination has skyrocketed. In our latest blog article, we’re covering some of the famous filming locations that you may recognise from some of your favourite television shows and movies!

Survivor: Cook Islands

Producers of the Survivor franchise selected Aitutaki Lagoon in the Cook Islands as the main location for their thirteenth season, and with good reason. The many motu or islets provided picture-perfect backdrops for the series, with each of the four tribes residing on a different motu. Many of the challenges were filmed on the famous One Foot Island and reward experiences took place on Rarotonga and Atiu.

Cast Away: Fiji

The famous Tom Hanks movie “Cast Away” was filmed on Modriki, a small uninhabited island located off the coast of Viti Levu in Fiji. A tiny island just 1.15km in length and 600 meters wide, Modriki is home to several different species of flora and fauna including the Wilson’s Storm Petrel…

Visitors to Fiji can visit Modriki on a day tour and spend the day exploring the island and the different sites where the movie scenes were filmed.

Return to Paradise: Samoa

Producers selected Samoa as the filming location for their 1953 film “Return to Paradise” and in 2011, local business woman Ramona Su’a Pale built a resort of the same name on the famous beach where filming took place. Visitors to Return to Paradise Resort and Spa can enjoy this famous stretch of beach as well as the 4-star luxury resort facilities.

Couples Retreat: Bora Bora

“Couples Retreat” is a 2009 rom-com starring a string of famous names including Vince Vaughn, Kristen Bell, Dana Fox and Jason Bateman. It was filmed in Bora Bora and the resort that features heavily throughout the film is the St Regis Bora Bora Resort.

Bachelor in Paradise Australia: Fiji

The very first season of “Bachelor in Paradise Australia” – a spin-off series from the Bachelor franchise – was filmed at Mango Bay Resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast with some of the dates also occurring at nearby The Warwick Fiji and The Naviti Resort. The series showcases some beautiful scenery from this region and tourists can recreate some of the dates and activities that the contestants took part in when they visit.
