How long to holiday in the Cook Islands

Published 10th Aug 2023

The Cook Islands are a popular destination known for beautiful beaches, clear turquoise waters, and a relaxed island atmosphere. Made up of 15 islands, from the main island of Rarotonga or the breathtaking Aitutaki, through to the remote atoll of Rakahanga - you can find your piece of paradise during a Cook Islands holiday.

So how long to holiday in the Cook Islands?

The number of days you should spend in the Cook Islands depends on the activities you plan to engage in, the places you want to see, and ultimately your budget.

With 7 days you can comfortably explore Rarotonga or Aitutaki. If you want to visit both or you’re looking for a laid-back beach holiday and want to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands, then 10 days would be a good amount of time to spend in the Cook Islands. This would give you enough time to explore multiple islands, visit different beaches, and experience the local culture and cuisine.

However, suppose you have a specific itinerary in mind for your Cook Islands travel or plan to engage in more activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, hiking, or exploring the local markets and villages. In that case, you might consider extending your holiday to two or more weeks as this would also allow you to visit multiple atolls.

Travellers to the Cook Islands can stay up to a month on a visitor visa so if you can stay longer, there’s plenty to do! You can read more about Spacifica Travel’s advice on the Cook Islands here!

What activities can you do in the Cook Islands?

The Cook Islands offer a range of activities and attractions to suit various interests. Here are some popular things to do in the Cook Islands:

  1. Explore the Beaches: The Cook Islands are known for their stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters and white sand. Some popular beaches include Muri Beach, Aroa Beach, and Titikaveka Beach. You can relax, swim, snorkel, or simply soak up the sun.
  2. Snorkelling and Diving: The underwater world of the Cook Islands is teeming with colourful coral reefs, tropical fish, turtles, and much more marine life. Grab your snorkelling gear, a sea scooter or go on a diving excursion to explore the vibrant reefs and underwater caves. Titekaveka is one of the best beaches to snorkel off, the surrounding lagoon is calm and safe, and you can often have the whole place to yourself!
  3. Island Hopping: The Cook Islands comprise 15 main islands, each with its own unique charm. Take a boat or plane to explore different islands such as Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Atiu, and Mauke, and discover their distinct landscapes, culture, and history.
  4. Visit Aitutaki Lagoon: Aitutaki is famous for its breathtaking lagoon, often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Take a lagoon cruise, go kayaking, or enjoy a scenic flight over the lagoon to experience its beauty up close, and don’t forget to get your passport stamped on One Foot Island!
  5. Cultural Experiences: Immerse yourself in Cook Islands' vibrant culture by attending a traditional dance performance or cultural show. Visit the Te Vara Nui Village in Rarotonga for an interactive cultural experience and dance along to the thrilling drums!
  6. Hiking and Nature Walks: Lace up your hiking boots and explore the islands' lush interiors. Rarotonga offers various hiking trails, including the Cross Island Trek, which takes you through dense forests and offers panoramic views. You can see the whole island from the centre at the top of Te Rua Manga or “the Needle” – a tall pointy rock at the trek’s highest point. Don’t forget to pack your swimmers and enjoy a refreshing swim at the stunning Wigmore’s Waterfall located at the end of the trek!
  7. Visit the Punanga Nui Market: Head to the Punanga Nui Market in Rarotonga to experience the local food, crafts, fresh produce, and vibrant atmosphere. It's a great place to shop for souvenirs, grab yourself a Pareu (sarong) or a locally farmed black pearl.
  8. Enjoy Water Sports: Engage in thrilling water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking, jet skiing, or kiteboarding. Many resorts and tour operators offer equipment rentals and water sports activities.
