Travel Guide to Pitcairn Island

Published 15th May 2024

Tucked away in the vast expanse of the South Pacific Ocean lies Pitcairn Island, a remote and enigmatic destination lauded by travel writers, conservationists, and rovers of wild and wonderful shores. The island itself is British ruled in the waters of French Polynesia, farther from any continent than any other inhabited island, and the main method of transport is quad bike – how is that for adventurous?! With its rich history and unique way of life, there are experiences to be had on Pitcairn Island that are unlike anywhere else in the world. In this travel guide, we'll delve into everything you need to know to plan your journey to this secluded island.

Passport and Visa Requirements:

Before embarking on your journey to Pitcairn Island, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. Additionally, visitors who are arriving and departing on the same vessel and are staying less than 14 days don’t require an entry visa. Middle names are not necessary for your booking, however as immigration requirements are subject to change this should be checked closer to your time of booking.

Currency and Expensiveness:

The official currency of Pitcairn Island is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) but US Dollars (USD) are also accepted in some places. While cash is rarely used on island it’s advisable to bring a sufficient amount for on island gifts and any extras during your travels, as all meals are included while you’re on island when booking a Spacifica Travel package to Pitcairn Island.

Vaccinations and Travel Insurance:

No specific vaccinations are required for travel to Pitcairn Island though it's always a good idea to ensure that routine vaccinations are up to date before travelling. Additionally, travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unexpected medical emergencies or trip cancellations.

How to Get There from Australia and How Long to Stay:

Reaching Pitcairn Island from Australia requires careful planning due to its remote location. The route included in Spacifica Travel packages involvesd flying to Tahiti and then taking a ship to Pitcairn Island. The duration of your visit is then determined by the ship’s schedule but generally includes 4 days on the island. This can be extended to 11 or 18 days depending on the vessel.

When to Travel:

The schedule for vessel visits increases in frequency in April-September so these months are the best for planning your visit. That being said, the island doesn’t have a high or low season so any time of year will bring a fantastic (and not crowded!) experience.
