Your Guide to Eating & Drinking on Your Lord Howe Island Holiday

Published 15th Jul 2022

After a long day of hiking, snorkelling, and exploring on your Lord Howe Island holiday you’ll want to know the best places to bust the hunger and refuel. This World Heritage Listed island paradise only welcomes 400 visitors at any one time, so it’s best to plan where you’ll want to dine. It’s also a good idea to check with your Lord Howe Island accommodation when restaurants and cafés are open. They’ll have a restaurant guide, and can help you make bookings – these are essential so you don’t miss out!

Lord Howe Island is known for its limited number of cars. While you can walk and cycle easily around the island, there are options for those that don’t want to walk off their dinner. At Spacifica Travel, we ensure all of our Lord Howe Island packages include evening restaurant transfers.

Restaurants & Cafés

A favourite dining spot of ours (and many locals) is the Coral Café. This is the top spot for a hearty breakfast, a pick-me-up lunch, or a nice dinner with a glass of wine or ale. And to let you in on a secret: some of our Lord Howe Island packages feature BONUS Coral Café dining vouchers.

Located at Earl’s Anchorage and close to iconic Lagoon Beach is Anchorage Restaurant. Featuring an ever-evolving menu using some of the best locally caught fish and locally grown produce, Anchorage serves up breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just casual drinks - alongside studding ocean views. This is the only restaurant on Lord Howe Island that is serviced by a private aircraft. Plus they have an on-site bakery with daily baked artisan sourdough and other treats. We’re drooling just thinking about it.

If a Lord Howe Island holiday where you’ll be wined and dined appeals, consider a stay at Arajilla Retreat or Capella Lodge. Both are luxury accommodation options that include breakfast, lunch, dinner and selected drinks daily.

Barbecues, Picnics & Quick Eats

Is there anything better than a beach barbecue? With 11 beautiful beaches on Lord Howe Island you should consider taking advantage of the communal beach barbecues. Fresh fish can be delivered to guests staying in self-catering apartments. So grab some drinks, throw some food on the barbie and marvel at the beautiful views.

For the romantics out there why not organise a picnic for you and your special someone. Love Lord Howe organises pop up picnics in some of the island’s most beautiful locations. Complete with a grazing platter, bottle of wine, and plush cushions and rugs, it’s perfect for a lazy afternoon.

If you’re looking for a quick, tasty lunchtime bite, then pop into Thompson’s Store. Their takeaway menu has burgers, fish and chips, rolls, salads and coffee. It’s a great spot to get a feed on those days when you’re in-between hiking and snorkelling.

Sundowner Spots

Island inspired cocktails in a historic Lord Howe Island building overlooking the lagoon – if this sounds perfect then The Crooked Post is the place for your sunset refreshments. They also open earlier on Tuesdays for tacos.

Keen golfers will be glad to know that after a day on the green the Sunset Bar & Grill will welcome them. Plus, if you celebrate your hole in one a little too hard, there’s free transport back to your accommodation!

If IPAs are your thing, make sure you give LHI Brewing Co. a try. This local brewing company creates acclaimed craft beer inspired by the island’s flora and fauna. Our recommendation is the Double Header IPA, inspired by the Double Header Wrasse, an endemic fish to Lord Howe Island.
