Atiu Island, Cook Islands

Atiu Island

Atiu, or the ‘island of birds’ as its known, is a hidden gem amongst the vast expanses of the Cook Islands. What was once an active volcano has now become a thriving island that needs to be seen to be believed.

Surrounded by a makatea, which is a band of sharp volcanic coral, Atiu has a vastly unique landscape including cliffs, sandy coves and limestones caves which act as a home to the Kopeka bird. The caves also hold a very spiritual significance with the local people, as they also are burial sites for many fallen Polynesian Warriors.

As well as the birds and the beautiful landscape, Atiu is well known for having some of the best coffee around. Regarded in many parts of the world as a ‘gourmet’ variety, the Atiu bean is completely organic and is best enjoyed roasted with coconut cream to extract the full flavour. Any of the 400 inhabitants of the island would be more than happy to brew you a cup or two while they share stories about their lovely little corner of the world.
