Vanua Levu, Fiji

Vanua Levu

Just to the northwest of Taveuni, Vanua Levu is the second-largest island in Fiji. While it is less developed than some other areas of Fiji, Vanua Levu offers an authentic Fijian experience with its untouched landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The island is a melting pot of diverse communities, from small rural villages to bustling towns like Labasa, the main commercial hub. Vanua Levu is often considered the heart of Fijian culture, with a deeply ingrained way of life that prioritizes the land, family, and tradition.

For those interested in exploring natural beauty, Nabou and Savusavu Bay are must-see locations. Savusavu, a picturesque town on the island’s southern coast, is known for its natural hot springs and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The town’s waterfront is lined with charming cafes and local shops, offering a peaceful atmosphere for traveller’s to relax and enjoy the slower pace of life. The surrounding forests, waterfalls, and lagoons provide ample opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and swimming.

Vanua Levu is also a haven for water sports enthusiasts. The island’s untouched reefs, coves, and beaches provide ideal conditions for diving, snorkeling, and fishing. Its isolation has helped preserve the island’s pristine marine environment, making it a paradise for divers and nature lovers looking to explore Fiji’s underwater world without the crowds.

Getting There and Getting Around

Both Taveuni and Vanua Levu are accessible via regular flights from Nadi or Suva on Viti Levu, or by ferry for those seeking a more scenic and adventurous journey. Once on the islands, getting around is easy with local taxis, rental vehicles, or guided tours, which provide an enriching way to explore both islands at a leisurely pace.

Taveuni and Vanua Levu represent the untamed and beautiful side of Fiji, offering everything from lush rainforests and pristine beaches to vibrant cultures and world-class diving. These northern islands are perfect for traveller’s seeking a more relaxed and authentic Fijian experience, where nature’s beauty and local traditions take center stage. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or a cultural explorer, Taveuni and Vanua Levu are islands that should be on every traveller’s bucket list.
