Fiji Travel Tips
When to Visit
There is no real winter in Fiji, with the average daily temperate ranging from 26 to 31 degrees all year round. The evenings can become a little cooler, especially across the winter months. While Fiji is located in an area of the South Pacific can receive tropical cyclones, these are few and far between and usually occur when temperatures and rainfall increase from November to April. The most popluar time to visit Fiji is during the dry season or winter months as well as the school holidays, so be sure to talk to our expert team about your holiday preferences so we can advise the most suitable time of year for your trip.
Language
Fiji is as diverse as it is beautiful. English is the official language, but you’ll also hear Fijian (iTaukei) and Fiji Hindi, reflecting the island’s Indigenous roots and Indo-Fijian heritage. Say bula (hello) and you’re halfway to making a local friend!
Time Zone
Fiji, the sun-kissed gem of the South Pacific, runs on island time—literally! Sitting at UTC+12, Fiji is about 2 hours ahead of Brisbane and 1 hour ahead of Sydney and Melbourne. But when daylight saving hits in November, Fiji turns the clock up to UTC+13, staying a step—or two—ahead. While Aussies are winding down, Fiji is already in tomorrow, sipping cocktails under swaying palms. So get ready to lose track of time—in the best way possible—in this tropical wonderland!
Currency
The local currency used in Fiji is the Fijian Dollar (FJD), and AUD$1 is roughly FJD$1.50. While major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops in urban areas, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller purchases and transactions, especially in rural or remote areas where credit card facilities may be limited. ATMs are available in major towns and tourist areas.
As for general costs, on average you can expect to spend around FJD$50-100 for a mid-range meal for two, while street food and local eateries offer more budget-friendly options. A local beer will cost around FJD$8 while a room service burger, fries and soft drink at a Denarau hotel can cost around FJFJ$60. As always, the quality and location of the establishment determine the price.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended when visiting Fiji.
Unexpected events can occur even on holidays! For peace of mind to avoid being unprepared, make sure when researching travel insurance that your policy will cover trip cancellations, unexpected emergencies, medical expenses, lost luggage, and loss or damage any valuable goods you are taking. Ensure your insurance policy includes coverage for diving, white water rafting, car rental, boating or other adventure activities you are planning on doing on your holiday to Fiji. Additionally, consider purchasing a policy that provides coverage for tropical illnesses and medical evacuations, as healthcare facilities may be limited in remote areas you may visit.
If you have questions regarding the benefits of travel insurance or want to know what you may be covered for, reach out to our friendly team at Spacifica Travel who may be able to assist.
Electricity
Fiji speaks your plug’s language! Type I sockets and 240V voltage mean your Aussie devices will feel right at home. One less thing to pack—easy!
How to get there
The main gateway to Fiji is Nadi International Airport, located on the island of Viti Levu. Several airlines operate direct flights from a number of ports on the East Coast of Australia to Nadi with flight durations ranging from around 3 to 4 hours.
Once you arrive in Fiji, inter-island travel to other islands in the archipelago is possible via domestic flights, ferries, or private boat charters. Domestic flights operate regularly between Nadi and other islands, while ferries provide a more affordable option for travelling between Viti Levu and the Mamanuca Islands.
When planning your itinerary, consider spending at least a week in Fiji to fully experience its beauty and culture. However, if time permits, extending your stay to two weeks allows for a more leisurely exploration of the islands and their unique attractions.
Entry Requirements
For Australians planning to visit Fiji, a valid passport is required with at least six months validity from the date of entry. Fortunately, Australian citizens do not need to obtain a visa for stays of up to four months. However, it's essential to ensure your passport meets the entry requirements and to check visa regulations prior to your departure, as they may vary depending on your specific circumstances. Currently only first and last names are required on flight and hotel bookings, but as immigration requirements are subject to change it is important to confirm this is still accurate at the time you book.
