Blue Friday
Book better. Travel kinder. Help protect the blue that connects us all.
What is Blue Friday?
This year, Spacifica Travel is turning Black Friday blue.
The Pacific Ocean is more than a picture-perfect holiday backdrop – it’s the world’s largest and deepest ocean, covering more than 30% of the Earth’s surface and sustaining life on our planet. But it’s in serious trouble. Climate change, pollution, overfishing, acidification and habitat loss are placing this vital ecosystem – and the communities who depend on it – at serious risk.
So, instead of encouraging more buying, Spacifica Travel is choosing to give back.
From 28 November to 5 December, for every international traveller booked with Spacifica Travel, we’ll donate $25 to ocean conservation to help protect the marine wonder that supports us all.
No sales. No gimmicks. Just meaningful action to protect what matters.
Why are our oceans important?
Oceans are far more than beautiful destinations – they’re the life-support system of the planet. They produce half of the world’s oxygen, absorb carbon, regulate climate and keep global weather systems in balance.
They also absorb 25% of carbon emissions and more than 90% of excess heat, making them a powerful defence against climate change. But this protection comes at a cost – warming waters, increased acidity and declining oxygen levels threaten marine life and the people who rely on it.
A healthy ocean provides livelihoods for 3 billion people, supports global tourism, strengthens coastal communities and drives the blue economy. When we look after the ocean, it looks after us.
Supporting those making a difference
Throughout the Pacific, local organisations are working tirelessly to protect the ocean that so many communities rely on. During the Blue Friday period, you can choose which of these incredible groups your $25 donation supports:
Te Ipukarea Society (TIS) – home grown protection
The Cook Islands is home to Marae Moana (“Sacred Ocean”), the world’s largest multi-use marine park spanning nearly two million square kilometres. The Te Ipukarea Society (TIS) helps care for this extraordinary ecosystem through community-focused programs and independent, research-driven environmental advocacy. Small but mighty, TIS plays a vital role in protecting the Cook Islands’ marine life and cultural heritage.
Coral Gardeners – reviving the reef
Based in Tahiti, Coral Gardeners is on a mission to plant one million climate-resilient corals. Using cutting-edge restoration techniques, the team grows and plants hardy corals to restore reef ecosystems and strengthen local communities through a “bluer economy.” So far, they’ve planted over 100,870 corals – and they’re just getting started.
Conservation International – protecting nature through science
Conservation International accelerates large-scale ocean conservation by expanding and strengthening Marine Protected Areas worldwide. In Samoa and Fiji, they work closely with local communities and governments to support sustainable fisheries, improve food security, restore critical ecosystems and safeguard biodiversity. Their science-led approach helps protect nature while empowering the people who depend on it.
How you can help
Protecting our oceans is a shared responsibility – every action, big or small, can make a difference. Here are a few simple ways you can make a positive impact:
Leave only footprints: When visiting the beach, take all your belongings and rubbish with you. A quick clean-up before you go helps keep our coastlines pristine.
Choose eco-friendly operators: When you travel, look for tour providers committed to sustainability, conservation and meaningful cultural experiences. Your support helps strengthen responsible tourism.
Use reef-safe sunscreen: Protect your skin and marine life by choosing reef-safe sunscreen, free from harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate.
Support conservation efforts: Whether through donations, volunteering or spreading awareness, support organisations that work to protect the ocean.
This Blue Friday, choose a holiday that gives back.
Book your next South Pacific escape with Spacifica Travel during Blue Friday and help protect the ocean that connects us all. Every booking makes a real difference.
