Discovering Tahiti’s Hidden Gems: Fun Facts and Insider Tips

Published 31 May 2023

While everybody knows about French Polynesia’s crowning jewels, the islands of Tahiti are home to some incredible hidden gems that are too often overlooked by tourists. This group of islands holds so many wonders and marvels, that it’s no surprise many get passed by during a Tahiti holiday.

At Spacifica Travel, we aim to fix that. Our extensive knowledge of Tahiti and its surrounding islands means we can highlight some of the best hidden gems this part of the world has to offer. Make sure you discover some of these lesser-known locations during your next trip to the islands of Tahiti.

Natural Hidden Gems in Tahiti

There are many natural hidden gems nestled amongst the islands of Tahiti just waiting for you to discover. Perhaps some of the most mesmerising are the many waterfalls scattered around the islands of Raiatea and Ta’haa.

Both Raiatea and Ta’haa are quite mountainous, and whenever there’s heavy rainfall, there are dozens of large waterfalls that flow all throughout the islands. We recommend you visit around the wet season—which is typically around summer—to give yourself the best chance in seeing these natural wonders.

Hidden Gem Spots around Tahiti

When you do enough digging, you are bound to find plenty of great hidden gems dotted throughout the islands of Tahiti. Here are some of our favourites.

Pineapple Plantations on Moorea

These pineapple plantations on the island of Moorea allow you to see how this tropical fruit gets made and all the amazing things it can be used to create. Better still, these plantations often let you drink the freshly squeezed juice—which is always going to taste sweet and refreshing on a sunny Pacific day.

Rum Distillery on Taha’a

The only thing more exciting than drinking some rum in the South Pacific is drinking rum freshly made from locally produced sugarcane on the island of Taha’a. As always, these things taste better when they have been locally sourced.

Pearl Farming

If you are looking for an incredibly unique activity that appeals to all ages, you and your family should try your hand at pearl farming. Any pearls that you find can be used to make jewellery—acting as a precious memento for your time spent in this part of the world.

Hidden Gem Restaurants in the Islands of Tahiti

If you are planning a Bora Bora holiday, then you should absolutely track down the little-known restaurant Villa Ixora. Its small size is the reason many people overlook it, but this restaurant has a world class chef who makes unbelievable French cuisine. It is also said Villa Ixora has attracted its fair share of celebrities over the years, so you never know who you might run into if you decide to dine here.

If you are on the main island of Tahiti, then you should pay the Roulottes a visit. This is a collection of food trucks that gathers by the ferry terminal each and every night to serve a range of delicious dishes. The food and drinks are all reasonably priced, making this a great place to feed a large family or travel group.
