Fijian Cultural Performance: A Unique Heritage Told Through Music and Dance

Updated 3 Nov 2026

A visit to Fiji is about more than beautiful beaches and warm tropical water. Look a little closer and you'll find a culture shaped by centuries of stories, traditions, music and dance – and some of the best ways to experience it are through the people who bring those stories to life.

For travellers looking for a Fijian cultural performance in Nadi, VOU Hub Fiji offers an experience with a difference.

Rather than simply presenting traditional dances on stage, VOU combines Fijian heritage with contemporary dance, theatre, music and storytelling. At the heart of its evening program is Fiji Untold, a theatrical performance inspired by Fijian myths and legends and brought to life through a vibrant fusion of traditional and contemporary performance.

Whether you choose the show on its own or make an evening of it with dinner and drumming, Fiji Untold offers a memorable way to connect with the stories and spirit of Fiji.

What Is VOU Hub Fiji?

VOU Hub is an arts and cultural venue in Nadi, established by VOU, a Fijian contemporary dance company founded in 2007. The company has toured internationally, sharing Fijian dance and stories with audiences around the world, and established VOU Hub in 2019 as a dedicated space for arts, culture and activities.

Located just a short drive from Denarau, the Hub is home to a rotating program of evening theatrical performances, with Fiji Untold presented on Thursdays and Sundays.

The experience is energetic and theatrical, but its roots are firmly in Fiji, which makes VOU particularly interesting for travellers who want to experience Fijian culture without simply watching a traditional dance performance from the sidelines.

Fiji Untold: A Fijian Story Comes to Life

Myths, legends and the journey of Lagi

Fiji Untold takes audiences into a world of Fijian legends, mythical creatures, dance and storytelling. At the centre of the story is Lagi, a young woman whose act of rebellion leads her away from her village and into a mysterious Fijian underworld. Her journey becomes one of courage, self-discovery and redemption, as she encounters a world filled with mythical characters and creatures.

The combination of movement, music, theatrical production and storytelling allows the audience to become immersed in a world inspired by Fiji's rich oral traditions and mythology. And while the story draws on traditional Fijian culture, VOU's approach is distinctly contemporary. Vou Hub Performers

Traditional roots, contemporary performance

If you've seen a traditional meke in Fiji before, it's worth knowing that VOU is not simply presenting another version of the same experience.

The company describes its performances as a blend of researched traditional stories and heritage with contemporary dance and theatrical production. Traditional Fijian dance, known as meke, is fundamentally a form of storytelling through movement, and VOU builds on that tradition with its own modern style.

The result is a performance that feels rooted in Fiji while also being bold, energetic and highly theatrical. For visitors, this offers a different perspective on Fijian culture – one that shows how traditional stories can continue to evolve and find new audiences.

More Than a Show

Start the evening with Fijian drumming

One of the pleasures of the VOU experience is that the evening can begin before the main performance. The experience includes an interactive drumming session, giving guests an opportunity to get involved rather than simply taking their seats and watching.

There's something particularly fitting about beginning an evening of storytelling with the sound of Fijian drums. It sets the mood for what follows and introduces another important part of the performance experience – rhythm. Drummers and Performers

Add dinner for a complete evening

If you'd like to turn the performance into a full night out, VOU also offers a dinner and show option.

Guests can arrive at the VOU Hub for dinner and the drumming experience before settling in for the live theatrical performance. The current evening package includes return hotel transfers from Nadi-area properties, making it a convenient option for visitors staying around Denarau and Nadi.

The evening program currently runs from around 6pm to 9pm, with the live show starting at 7pm, although timings can change, so it's worth checking when booking. Alternatively, travellers can choose the show-only option if preferring to make their own dinner plans.

Why See a Fijian Cultural Performance?

A cultural performance can be one of the easiest ways to begin understanding somewhere beyond its scenery. In Fiji, music, dance and storytelling are closely connected to cultural traditions and the passing on of stories. Meke, for example, has traditionally been used as a way of telling stories through dance. An experience such as Fiji Untold takes that storytelling tradition and presents it in a contemporary theatrical setting.

You don't need to know the stories beforehand. You don't need to be familiar with Fijian dance. You simply need to be willing to sit back and let the performance take you somewhere. You're not just learning about Fiji. You're experiencing one of the ways its stories continue to be shared.

A Cultural Experience with a Bigger Purpose

There's another reason VOU stands out. VOU operates as a social enterprise, with its work supporting sustainable careers and education opportunities for young Fijian artists. The organisation says its performances help fund scholarships and create pathways for Fijians working in the creative arts.

The people performing on stage aren't simply recreating Fijian culture for visitors. VOU is also creating opportunities for Fijian artists to develop their skills, build careers and contribute to the country's contemporary creative industry.

For travellers who value experiences that connect with the local community, it's an important part of the story.

Planning Your VOU Experience

VOU Hub is located on Maqalevu Road, just off Denarau Road in Nadi, making it easily accessible from the major Denarau resorts. Return transfers are included with the evening experience from a range of Nadi and Denarau-area hotels.

Fiji Untold is currently performed on Thursdays and Sundays, with the evening experience including the drumming session, dinner and live performance. A show-only option is also available.

If you're planning your Fiji holiday around the performance, it's worth checking the current schedule when booking as VOU's evening program rotates between different productions throughout the week. Fiji Untold

Experience Fiji Through Its Stories

Fiji's culture is everywhere – in its food, language, music, traditions and the stories passed from one generation to the next. At VOU Hub, those stories take centre stage. With its combination of Fijian mythology, traditional dance, contemporary performance, music and theatrical storytelling, Fiji Untold offers a memorable way to experience another side of Fiji.

Choose the show for an evening of live entertainment, or add dinner and drumming to make a complete night of it. Either way, you'll leave with more than photographs of Fiji's beaches.

You'll have a story of your own to take home.
