Top 5 Things to do in Lord Howe

Updated 13 Dec 2023

As a UNESCO World Heritage Listed destination, Lord Howe Island offers an abundance of natural beauty to discover. Whether you are a bird watcher, keen angler, scuba diver, yogi or just love all things outdoors – this is the place for you! Here are our favourite Top 5 Things to Do on Lord Howe Island but there is so much more to discover:

1. Hike Mt Gower

Towering majestically over Lord Howe Island at 875 metres is the stunning Mt Gower. As one of Australia’s best day walks, this takes top spot on our must-do list. Although the 8 hour hike is slightly challenging in places with rope-assisted climbs, the 360 degree view from the top is certainly worth the early wake up call.

2. Hand-Feed Fish at Ned’s Beach

Ned’s Beach is tempting for swimmers & snorkelers alike with its sparkling calm waters and colourful fringing reef. Aside from being a fantastic swimming beach, there is also a coin-operated fish food dispenser so you can also hand feed Mullet, Garfish, Kingfish, Silver-drummers and more!

Want to stay in accommodation close to Ned’s Beach? Check out Admiralty Apartments!

3. Take a Glass Bottom Boat Turtle Tour

Discover colourful coral, curious Green & Hawksbill Turtles and a kaleidoscope of fish all from the comfort of a glass-bottom boat. Available from September – March, this two hour cruise includes an optional snorkel at a wreck as well as light refreshments.

Lord Howe Island’s varied terrain provides an ideal environment for many unique species, including endemic flora & fauna such as the endangered Woodhen, the Lord Howe Island Phasmid (large stick-insect) as well as over 100 indigenous plant varieties. Take advantage of the island’s well-marked walking trails and enjoy a leisure walk or hike at your own pace to see how many creatures & critters you can spot!
