Your Guide to Aitutaki

Updated 26 Mar 2025

Aitutaki is the Cook Islands second most visited island, but we can say with certainty it is its most famous. Its beautiful lagoon is known the world over, and its image can be found on many a screen saver. But there is more to Aitutaki than the instaworthy views. Read on to find out what else makes this island so unique.

Culture

Aitutakians are the showmen of the Cooks, and the village of Vaipae, nicknamed Hollywood, attests to this. The high spirited, toe tapping, hip swinging performances of the drummers and the dancers are unmissable and unbeatable.  Be sure to catch the fire dancers, their mesmerising technique which takes years to perfect is a must see!

History

The oldest church in the Cook Islands is found on Aitutaki. Aitutaki was the first island to accept Christianity and the limestone coral rock church in Arutanga is magnificent. Stunning acoustics make for a moving experience of sound when the Sunday hymns are sung. Join a Sunday service to hear for yourself and admire the superbly designed interior.

Local Life

Arutanga Wharf buzzes during the week with local fisherman, yatchies and lagoon and fishing tours coming and going. But it is the markets on a Saturday which sees high activity with locals and tourists alike. Head along for a wander through and check out the wares. From colourful sarongs, souvenirs and the remarkable pandanus hats, mats and bags to fresh produce of every seasonal variety.

Lagoon Activities

There are countless ways to explore and enjoy the crystal clear, warm turquoise waters and uninhabited islands of the lagoon. A few of the more unique and ones you must try when you visit are; fly fishing for the mighty bonefish; make use of the kayaks at your resort and paddle out to one of the white sandy beaches and have it all to yourself for the day; or take a tour to One Foot Island and have your passport stamped at the world’s smallest post office. You will be the envy of your family and friends with your tales of adventure!
