Tour Itinerary:
Spend 1.5 hours on a guided tour of the West Coast of Tongatapu.
Majestic Blow Holes: Pupu’a Puhi: The rugged coast at the village of Houma provide a never ceasing display of the power of the sea. Four miles of coastal blow holes where the might of the Pacific Ocean is forced through natural rock fissures to create instant skyscrapers of water up to 30 metres high. As the southerly winds blow into Tongatapu the sea is driven into the southern coastline and sea spray erupts into the air. ‘Vaea’s whistle’or Mapu a Vaea are the most famous blowholes along the coastline.
Maka Sioata / Maui’s Throwing Rock: The largest of the seven boulders is 15 metres wide and estimated to weigh 1,600 tons. It currently sits more than 100 meters from the sea and 10 metres above sea level in the village of Kala’au not far from where the Blow Holes are to the Village of Houma. Legend says that Maui was annoyed with the Moa (Prehistoric Chicken) crowing too loud in the morning that he hurled this gigantic rock at them hence Maui’s Throwing Rock. Scientific shows that these Gigantic Rocks were hurled inland by a Giant Tsunami thousands of years ago.
Flying Foxes: The flying fox sanctuary at the village Kolovai is home to hundreds of fruit bats. Recorded in Tongan song and legend from time immemorial. This primordial fruit bats-harmless, immobile and seemingly lifeless-hang eerily from rows of ironwood pines along the main village road. They are considered sacred and a delicacy to be consumed only by members of the Royal Family.
