Tonga Travel Tips
When to Visit
Tonga enjoys a tropical climate characterized by warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, from May to October, is considered the best time to visit, with pleasant weather ideal for outdoor activities such as swimming, snorkelling, and hiking. Be mindful of the wet season, from November to April, which brings occasional rainfall and the possibility of tropical storms. For those keen on experiencing the majestic encounters with whales off the coast of Tonga then look to migration season in June – October.
Language
Tongan (lea fakatonga) is the proud official language of Tonga, spoken with musical rhythm and deep cultural roots.
English is also used in schools and business, but it’s the Tongan language that sings through ceremonies, church hymns, and everyday life.
Time Zone
Tonga shines brightly at UTC+13, sharing tomorrow with Samoa and parts of Fiji!
This means Tonga is 3 hours ahead of Brisbane year-round, and during daylight saving time just two hours ahead of Sydney.
An easy step ahead in time!
As one of the first countries to welcome each new day, Tonga is the perfect place to start fresh, celebrate life, chill out and maybe even toast the future before anyone else does.
Currency
The official currency of Tonga is the Tongan Pa'anga (TOP), and AU$1 converts to around TOP$1.50 at the moment. Tonga isn’t expensive to visit but you can expect to pay similar prices in restaurants and resorts as you do at home in Australia eg. A bottle of water for TOP$3, a cappuccino for TOP$7.
While credit cards are accepted in major establishments, it's advisable to carry cash for transactions in smaller shops and markets. Currency exchange services are available at banks and currency exchange bureaus in urban areas.
