A Tourist's Guide to Lord Howe Island

Published 26th Aug 2022

For such a small part of the world, Lord Howe Island has plenty to do - which is why a guide to Lord Howe Island is essential reading list material. Only a two hour flight from Sydney, Lord Howe offers all the ease and convenience you could want on a holiday. This secluded paradise feels uniquely far away and other-worldly with its lack of mobile phone reception and relaxed energy.

Our team at Spacifica Travel are lovers of Lord Howe Island holidays and have all the info on how you can have the best trip yet.

How to Get To Lord Howe Island

To travel to Lord Howe Island is a simple affair, only a short flight from Sydney with Qantas. Baggage restrictions can be tight, with 14kgs of checked baggage, so be sure to weigh your bags before leaving home to make sure they are in line with guidelines.  The island only lets 400 visitors in at any time, so keep this in mind when planning your next holiday as you will need to book in advance!

Once on the island, getting around is very easy by walking or bicycle. We encourage you to seek advice and tips from your accommodation and from locals as they are the best Lord Howe Island guides out there.

What To Do On Lord Howe Island

There are countless ways to spend your time on Lord Howe Island from water sports, to hiking, to kicking back and relaxing. We have listed just a few of our favourite activities for you to get stuck into.

Hiking and Walking

There are so many different tracks and trails for travellers to traverse while on Lord Howe, no matter their fitness or ability level. The most difficult is the Seven Peaks Walk - a five-day walk along cliffsides and through palm forests - that will leave you feeling accomplished and energised.

Mt Gower is an extremely popular climb that requires a bit of fitness but rewards its climbers with astonishing views of the natural landscape. Intermediate hill, beach walks, and bush walks offer some slightly easier walks that will get your heart racing without overdoing it.

Diving, Snorkelling, and Assorted Water Sports

Lord Howe Island has some truly stunning beaches and some of the best diving spots in the world. Kayaking, paddle boarding, and boat trips are available to all travellers, and are a great way to explore the island.

At Ned’s Beach, swimmers can hand feed fish, it is an incredibly popular activity! Snorkelling is also highly recommended as the Lord Howe Island Marine Park is home to over 90 species of coral and over 500 species of fish - including the beautiful Spanish Dancer. We also recommend making a trip to see the Ball’s Pyramid - the biggest sea stack in the world!

So Much More

There are so many ways to spend your time on Lord Howe Island, we know you will never be bored. The island is known for having some of the most visually stunning golf courses in the country, and we can see why. With crystal clear views of the Tasman Sea that surrounds, and rolling green hills, you will struggle to focus on the game.

Fishing is also extremely popular on Lord Howe, with the huge abundance of marine life that flock to the surroundings. Wahoo, Kingfish, and Yellowfish Tuna are just some of the things that people pick up on their days out. Just be sure to check restrictions and regulations around fishing before heading out.

Bird watching is also popular on Lord Howe as unique bird life can be spotted there over the course of the year. In January, travellers may find Sooty Terns, Brown Noddies, and Masked Boobies nesting and fledging along the island's walks and beaches. Later in the year, Mutton birds can be found in abundance as well.

What To Eat And Drink On Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island has an abundant range of dining options for travellers to partake in - no matter their budget. Fresh fish and seafood is a major staple of the island, as well as gluten-free and dairy-free food.

Thompson General Store has everything you could need for a day of adventuring, including several grocery items as well as a range of delicious burgers. A large number of the restaurants on the island also offer picnic services where you can pick your meals up in a woven basket to-go.
