Beach Fales in Samoa

Published 9th Nov 2023

Samoa’s version of camping is staying in a beach fale. What is a fale you ask? It is the Samoan word for building. Beach fales are usually run by a family and are built with thatched roofs; some with open sides while others are enclosed. They’re low-key, simple, affordable and may just be a mattress on the floor of a thatched open fale.

What beach fales offer is a unique experience falling asleep to the sound of the Pacific Ocean. But if that is not quite your style, then you can also choose a fale with walls and a bed.

Below is a list of some of the properties in Samoa that offer this experience.

Va I Moana Lodge

Va I Moana is nestled into a small cove with a range of accommodation from traditional open Samoan fales to air-conditioned Tui Moana suites all overlooking Asau Bay. The authentic feel of the surroundings at Va I Moana extends from the staff to the rooms. From the moment you arrive in this untouched corner of Savai’i, you will feel the rest of the world melt away, and you will become part of the Va I Moana family.

Stevensons at Manase

Located on a picturesque white sand beach at Manase on the North Coast of Savai’i Island, Stevenson’s offers an idyllic and isolated getaway. The property features accommodation types to suit all tastes and budgets from open-air Euro Fales, to the comfortable air-conditioned Beach Villas and Suites. Enjoy the sunset from the deck of the beach bar or dine in the cool shade of the open-air restaurant. A great place to relax and unwind. Come and join us in our little piece of paradise!

Litia Sini Beach Resort

All Beach-side accommodation are different forms of Falés, traditional Samoan bungalows situated above the beautiful white sandy beach, only steps from the sea. Traditional Falés are usually built with few posts, often with no walls, and a thatched roof with a round or oval shape. The Falés are constructed in a modern yet traditional Samoan style to ensure coolness inside, whilst remaining open to the fantastic ocean views.

Taufua Beach Fales

Located on the island of Upolu, directly on the beach, this property is a paradise for swimming, snorkelling and surfing. All fales are built in the traditional Samoan style of housing. A thatched roof on wooden posts, an elevated wooden floor. No walls - only when you want them. Closed fales have a veranda and timber wall panels to provide shelter or privacy; open fales have tarpaulins to give protection from rainfall. During the day woven mats are provided as floor cover; mattresses, sheets, pillows and a mosquito net ensure your comfort as an overnight visitor. There are fales with private ensuite available. Open fales have shared bathroom facilities.

Vaiula Beach Fales

A perfect piece of paradise on the untouched stretch of white sandy beach on the secluded southeastern side of Upolu Island about 35km from the main Town of Apia. Offering traditional Fales all with shared facilities.

Lauiula Beach Fales

Located on the beautiful white sandy beaches of Lano village on the northern side of Savaii Island, owned and operated by a local family. The reef is about 500 m away and the lagoon is suitable for swimming, snorkelling and canoeing at low and high tide.
