Lord Howe Island for Families

Published 17th Aug 2020

We all know that families come in all shapes and sizes. And we understand that planning a family holiday can be somewhat challenging in an effort to ensure that everyone’s needs are met. That’s why we think that Lord Howe Island is one of the best family holiday destinations in the South Pacific. Escape the hustle and bustle of peak hour traffic, pollution and large crowds and create lasting family memories exploring this pristine jewel of the South Pacific.  With so much to see and do, Lord Howe Island truly is paradise.

One of the greatest benefits about relaxing on this eco friendly island is that you do not need a car to travel around the island. Therefore, no squabbling over who gets stuck in the middle seat. Walking and cycling is the norm, with evening transfers to all of the restaurants on the island included in your package.  There are a number of accommodation options from 3 star through to 5 star properties with the choice of family units, private beach houses, and one, two and three bedroom self contained apartments.  Most properties provide complimentary use of beach towels, beach umbrellas and picnic gear for guests to utilise during their stay. Snorkel gear can be hired on the island, as can bicycles.

Lord Howe Island is surrounded by a World Heritage Listed Marine Park, with the southernmost coral reef reaching out up to three nautical miles. The Marine Park is home to over 500 fish species and 90 species of living coral, and yes, you may see Nemo.  The reef also provides a protective barrier enabling the calm, crystal blue waters that surround the glorious golden sandy beaches. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling, stand up paddle boards and kayaking.

The climate is semi-tropical so you can enjoy spending time in the great outdoors year round.  There are a number of picnic and wood fired BBQ areas around the island, a playground with swings and climbing equipment and gorgeous beaches to enjoy.  Situated on the north east of the island is one of the most popular, Ned’s Beach.  Surrounded by coral reef, the fish have become accustomed to being hand fed, so the snorkelling here is excellent. Make sure to take some breadcrumbs with you. The water is gentle, so ideal for kids to happily splash about in the shallows and build sand castles, whilst Mum and Dad relax on the beach.

Old Settlement beach to the north is also a fabulous and relaxing spot.  Take in some snorkelling with the turtles who are often spotted here, with the lush tropical mountains providing a scenic backdrop.  For the bigger kids keen to surf or body board, Blinky Beach on the east side offers up some awesome waves.

North Bay is a secluded beach, accessible by foot or water. The walk is well worth it, with white sandy beach and turquoise water.  The snorkelling is epic with colourful coral and marine life, along with the 1963 wreck of the tuna boat, the Favourite, to discover.

If you prefer to view the marine life from above, enjoy a glass bottom boat tour. Or get out on the water on a fishing trip, round island scenic boat cruise, or a bird watching tour out to Balls Pyramid. Fun fact, this 551 metre iconic rock stack is the tallest out of water Monolith in the world.

There is so much to explore, either by bicycle or by foot.  The walking tracks are suitable for all fitness levels.  Mt Gower is the highest mountain at 875 metres, and is one of the more challenging, however the incredible 360 degree vistas are well worth the 8 hour return hike.

A number of ships have run aground around Lord Howe Island. Hear the tales of the sunken treasure chests of gold coin lost forever, whaling boats and trading boat shipwrecks, and see historical artifacts and photographs which are on display in the island Museum.  Learn about the early settlement as Lord Howe became a hub for whaling ships in the 1800s, and later as a radio base during World War II.  The Museum has 5 core collections including environmental and flora and fauna displays.
