Our Travel Guide to Samoa Holidays 2023

Published 6th Dec 2022

As we enter the new year, Samoa holidays in 2023 are becoming more and more appealing. Samoa is a place of natural beauty, smiling locals, warm welcomes, and serene waterfalls. Experience culture, tradition, nature and adventure all in one beautiful country on your next South Pacific holiday. We can point you in the right direction with our condensed Travel Guide to Samoa!

Culture

Samoa is a proud Christian country and Sundays are reserved for church, family and rest. Visitors are warmly invited to attend church services often led by a beautiful choir. The Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Apia is unmissable. Traditional Samoan art-work, intricate timber craft and colourful stained glass windows provide the most beautiful backdrop for a tradition that will leave you with goosebumps.

Another memorable experience is a Samoan Fiafia Night. Traditionally filled with song, dance, music and delicious food. Generations have been coming together for more than 3,000 years to mark special occasions in this way and tourists can join the fun too. Many of the resorts and hotels host their own Fiafia nights however the Samoan Cultural Village also holds regular performances which are open to the public and free to enter.

A visit to the Samoan Cultural Village also provides guests with a quick insight into the culture and tradition of the local people. Here you can discover the art of tapa making, traditional tattooing and can even learn how to prepare a Samoan ‘umu’.

Natural Beauty

There are so many natural wonders in Samoa. To Sua Trench might just be the most stunning hole in the ground on Earth! After a casual stroll across parkland scattered with fale huts, behind a small fence is the most amazing sight. A 30 metre hole surrounded by lush vegetation sitting in the middle of a lava field on the edge of the most scenic coastline. Created by an ancient lava eruption the land around it slipped away resulting in two large holes joined by a lava tube cave. The pool is connected to the ocean by an underwater cave and filled with crystal clear seawater. The climb down the narrow ladder is well worth the refreshing and amazing swim in one of Samoa’s most incredible natural attributes.

30 minutes further along the road is another spectacular Samoan beauty. Togitogiga Falls is a perfect spot for water lovers to enjoy a relaxing swim. There is plenty of space to relax with two smaller falls flowing into a large deep pond.

Local Food

Food plays an important role in the Samoan culture and there is a variety of ways to enjoy all the culinary delights. There are so many flavours to relish whilst in Samoa and visitors are spoilt for choice. Markets are one of the best ways to immerse yourself into the daily life of a local and discover the Samoan food hand cooked with love. Enjoy freshly caught seafood, organically grown produce, and icy cold nui while you stroll around in a food coma. There are a number of markets in Apia that operate during the day and night to keep you busy.

Another tasty treat to savour in Samoa is the local beer. Samoa Breweries was established in 1978 using locally grown breadfruit to brew a German style lager. ‘Vailima’ translates as ‘water in hand’ and goes well with whatever meal you choose in Samoa.

Savai’i

Natural, untouched beauty abounds on the volcanic island of Savai’i. Just a 90 minute ferry trip from the main island of Upolu it is easily accessible to all – the perfect day trip for your 2023 Samoa holiday!

A visit to the Saleaula lava fields reveals days gone by where lava flowed frequently between 1905 & 1911. The dried lava today has formed its own desert like appearance with ruins that have survived the test of time. Alofaaga Blowholes are located on the south-west side of the island and are another amazing sight. Shooting water hundreds of metres into the air becomes even more fun when the locals throw a coconut in the mix. Just be ready to catch it!

The Savai’i Turtle Sanctuary is a great place to meet some cute little critters and spoil them with one of their favourite treats; rockmelon! For a small fee you can even take a dip in the water with the little guys. Once you’re ready to relax, The Barefoot Bar & Restaurant is a lovely spot to rehydrate and enjoy a bite to eat. Set right on the beach it is relaxing spot for a lazy afternoon.
