Things to do in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Published 30th Aug 2022

The Cook Islands Rarotonga is a hugely popular destination for travellers. If you’re wondering what you can do in Rarotonga, we have a list of some of our top Raro activities. From hiking tours to morning markets, there’s something for everyone!

Our team at Spacifica Travel love to plan Rarotongan holidays as no two itineraries are the same. To help you take charge of your trip to Rarotonga, we have outlined some of our top things to do while you visit the breathtaking South Pacific.

Visit the reef

Rarotonga is home to several of the Cook Islands best reef spots, and are a top must-see for any traveller. There are a couple of ways to do this, although snorkelling is definitely the most fun and interactive.

Snorkelling is most accessible at Muri Lagoon. A lagoon cruise will get you out onto the water where you can jump in and swim amongst the coral and the fish. This is a great activity for the whole family and is safe and easy. And due to the protection of the lagoon, you can count on clear and gentle waters.

Another great way to view the reef is on the Reef Sub - which is a cruise with a glass-bottom where you can see the reef moving under you. Catch sight of schools of fish and colourful reefs below your feet as you ride across the clear blue waters.

However you choose to experience Rarotonga’s colourful reef, this experience is a must see for any traveller.

Watch a Hermit Crab Race

While it may not sound like it on paper, there is something undeniably thrilling about watching a Hermit Crab race on the sands of a Rarotonga beach. The “sport” is actually incredibly popular across the Cook Islands, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find a race that you can enter into.

The rules are incredibly simple. All you need to do is select a hermit crab from a bucket, place it in the centre of a sand circle alongside other crabs, and wait to see which one can make it out of the circle first. It’s an endearing pastime that allows you to socialise with locals and allow your competitive side to shine.

Visit the Maire Nui Gardens

The Maire Nui Gardens are located on the southern shores of Rarotonga and offer visitors seven acres of spectacular tropical gardens to explore. With vibrant native platlife, lush lily ponds, and views of the mountain towering above, you will delight in the natural beauty of this slice of paradise.

Once you have finished exploring the gardens, you can enjoy some fresh food and drinks at the Grill Cafe located amongst the vegetation. Step into this wonderland and experience some of the island’s most breath-taking natural sights.

Over Island Hike

The Rarotonga over-island hike is an adventure that's a little off the beaten track for most travellers. The trek takes travellers right through the middle of the island - from one side to the other - and includes a climb to the highest peak. The trek is full of stunning views and rich natural scenery.

Despite this, the walk is actually not too strenuous, and the hardest part - the summit climb - is over nice and early. The whole trip takes only about three hours and ends at a waterfall where travellers can dive in and refresh themselves after a good day's work.

Your local guide will also provide some history and ecological information along the way. For travellers who are up for both and adventure and a challenge, this one is for you.

Day tour to Aitutaki

Aitutaki is an island paradise only 40 minutes by plane from Rarotonga. Day trips from Rarotonga and longer stays are a luxury that travellers shouldn’t miss. While a little pricier, Aitutaki is the definition of island tranquillity, with its sandy white beaches, crystal blue waters, and gently swaying palms.

A trip to Aitutaki will leave you feeling renewed, refreshed, and ready to get back to everyday life. There are some beautiful resorts on the island, but the day trip is definitely an excellent option if you would like to return to your Rarotonga accommodation.

If you have the time, this trip is a must do for any travellers to the Cook Islands.

Punanga Nui Morning Markets

If you are lucky enough to still be in Rarotonga on Saturday morning, then you should definitely visit the Punanga Nui Markets. The market has an energetic and lively pulse that is invigorating for locals and travellers alike.

Going to the markets is a great way to step out of the tourists path and connect with the locals of the island. The friendly Rarotongan stall holders would be thrilled to have you along to sample their beautiful craftwares and taste their delicious cuisine. It’s also the best place to grab a thoughtful souvenir for friends and family who couldn't join you in Rarotonga.

Situated in the heart of Rarotonga’s recreational area, Punanga Nui boasts fresh produce, delicious food, baked goods, and arts and crafts. Coupled with live music and friendly locals, you are sure to have a fun and delicious morning with your friends and family.
