Why Norfolk Island Accommodation with Car Hire is a Must

Published 7th Mar 2022

There are many reasons why Norfolk Island accommodation with car hire is essential. This little South Pacific gem may only be 8 x 5km in size, but there are over 120kms of roads to travel and you don’t want to miss a thing!

There is no public transport on the island and not all Norfolk Island hotels are located in the town centre such as Crest Apartments and Endeavour Lodge. Spacifica Travel offers Norfolk Island accommodation with car hire in all of our holiday packages. In most instances, the car is delivered directly to the guest’s resort making the entire process seamless.

Why You Need Car Hire on Norfolk Island

Whilst the Norfolk Island holiday packages come with plenty of tours included, there is still so much to explore beyond what’s on offer. Many of our Norfolk Island accommodation packages include car hire. Having a car gives you the freedom to experience the full beauty of Norfolk Island at your leisure. Included in all of our packages is a DIY Tour. Collect your device to provide the commentary and head off at your own pace. Our six tours will take you all over the island to discover the past, history, national parks and more!

Here at Spacifica Travel, we want to ensure your Norfolk Island holiday is memorable for all the right reasons and have come up with a list of our favourite must do drives to tick off during your holiday.

Crystal Pool

This beautiful spot consists of two natural rock pools filled with coral and crystal-clear waters. A short hike down to the pool is required, but completely worth it. None of the on-island tours visit Crystal Pool as it is only accessible by car and should be visited only at low tide. Be sure to check it out and enjoy a peaceful swim surrounded by fish!

Mount Pitt

Start your day with a morning drive to the very top of Mount Pitt. You will be mesmerised by the amazing 360° views of the entire island. This is a great spot to revisit towards the end of your holiday to get your bearings of all that you have seen and done on your Norfolk Island holiday.

Captain Cook Monument & Lookout

Grab yourself a coffee and scone and wind your way to the northern side of the island for some breathtaking rugged coastline scenery. Here, you will be spoilt for spectacular views and you may never want to leave. Check out the Bridle walking track and keep your eye out for the rare green parrot on your travels.

Hundred Acres Reserve

Enjoy a peaceful and serene walk amongst the natural beauty of enormous pines and white oaks. Hundred Acres Reserve protects an area of Norfolk Island’s coastal forest and provides an awesome vantage point for watching seabirds. Wander the loop track at a relaxed pace and say hello to the crooning mutton-birds and white terns along the way.

Emily Bay

Many Norfolk Island tours will include a visit to the famous Emily Bay, which well known for its spotless sand and pristine water. This stunning tropical beach is perfect for a paddle, a quiet swim or a snorkel to meet the local marine life. If you prefer to stay dry, it is also an ideal spot to sit and relax with a good book.

The bay is host to an offshore pontoon, known locally as ‘the raft’, providing a fun spot to jump into the water. Parking is available just a few steps from the sand so is very easy to unload your beach gear or a picnic.

Cemetery Beach

Located on Quality Row at the eastern end of the Kingston World Heritage Site is Cemetery Beach. Bordering the historic oceanfront cemetery, visitors can quietly ponder the past.

Read tombstones of convicts, soldiers, sailors and descendants of Bounty mutineers and many well-loved island residents. Cemetery Beach is a great spot for a swim and a favourite with local dog owners.

St Barnabas Chapel

A drive to see the spectacular 19th century church is a must for all visitors to Norfolk Island. With an open-door policy, you can wander in at any time and appreciate this labour of love for the missionaries who built it. Another short drive that you won’t regret!

Cockpit Waterfall

Located in a quiet pocket on the north coast of Norfolk Island, Cockpit Waterfall is another drive not to be missed. From the car park, follow the boardwalk out to the lookout. After heavy rain, the waterfall first drops into Cascade Creek and then over the cliffs into Cascade Bay. Even in the dry, you are surrounded by natural beauty - often in the company of nesting seabirds.

Driving on Norfolk Island

Driving on Norfolk Island is simple and safe. The speed is generally limited to 50km/hour and roaming livestock has right of way. You will delight in the freedom to explore and appreciate the time to stop and immerse yourself in all that this beautiful island has to offer.

This may just be the best small island in the world and you don’t want to miss a thing on your next Norfolk Island holiday. One last tip, don’t forget to wave to passing drivers. The famous ‘Norfolk wave’ is a friendly, community tradition and if you look closely, there are many techniques to master!
