Discover The Islands of Tahiti

Discover The Islands of Tahiti - From the blue waters of Bora Bora to the lush greens of Moorea, from the cultural heartbeat of Papeete to the archaeological treasures of Raiatea, the Islands of Tahiti offer a holiday experience that is hard to forget.

From honeymooners and those on a wedding anniversary to water sport and adventure enthusiasts, culture lovers, bucket-list types and those who simply crave being surrounded by stunning beauty, the Islands of Tahiti are a vast paradise waiting to be enjoyed.

French Polynesia consists of 118 islands, grouped into five archipelagos each with their own distinctive character and charm but all featuring picture-postcard natural beauty.

Much more than just a tropical paradise – Tahiti is the cultural and spiritual heart of French Polynesia, and the starting point of a journey into one of the world’s most captivating island groups. With its lush mountains, black-sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, and warm, vibrant communities, Tahiti invites you to slow down, listen to the rhythms of island life, and experience a place where nature and culture are deeply intertwined.

The islands of French Polynesia, known to their first settlers as Hōnua Mo‘a (sacred lands), were settled over a thousand years ago by skilled Polynesian navigators who crossed thousands of kilometres of open ocean guided only by the stars, ocean swells, and bird flight. These early voyagers brought with them not just physical tools, but a deep spiritual connection to the land and sea that still echoes through the islands today. In Tahiti, this heritage is proudly celebrated - in its music and dance, its language, tattoos, art, and in the everyday lives of its people.

Tahiti itself is a stunning island of contrast. The dramatic interior is a maze of volcanic peaks, lush valleys, and ancient trails once walked by Polynesian chiefs. Along its coastline, traditional villages blend seamlessly with modern life, where locals paddle outrigger canoes alongside surf breaks and vibrant markets fill with the scent of fresh fruit, monoi oil, and grilled seafood. Cultural pride is alive in the rhythms of the ‘ōte‘a and aparima dances, in the intricate designs of traditional tattoos, and in the storytelling passed down through generations.

Beyond Tahiti main island, the other islands within the Society group - such as Moorea, Huahine, and Bora Bora - offer unique glimpses into both Polynesian culture and the island’s natural beauty. Towering green peaks rise dramatically from tranquil lagoons, and coral reefs shimmer in hues of electric blue and soft rose. Each island has its own personality: Moorea is known for its relaxed charm and fertile landscape; Huahine for its deep spiritual roots and ancient marae (temples); and Bora Bora for its iconic lagoon and romantic allure.

Further out lie the coral atolls of the Tuamotu - vast, low-lying ribbons of sand and sea, where life is guided by the rhythm of the tides. Here, Polynesian traditions are lived quietly and naturally, in harmony with the environment. Pearl farming thrives, and the sea offers both nourishment and stories, passed down in song and legend.

In the Austral, Marquesas, and Gambier islands, Polynesian heritage feels even more rooted. These distant islands are havens for traditional craftsmanship, ancient archaeological sites, wild landscapes, and sacred spaces where dance, wood carving, and chanting still form the heartbeat of daily life.

To travel to Tahiti and its islands is not just to visit - it is to connect. With nature, with a proud and enduring culture, and with a deeper sense of place. French Polynesia is not simply a destination - it is a story unfolding in every wave, every drumbeat, and every sunset.
