Frequently asked questions about travelling to New Caledonia

Here are some common questions to assist you in the planning of your upcoming holiday

  • What is the culture of New Caledonia?
The cultural blend in New Caledonia is represented by two main influences, the indigenous Kanak peoples and the French European settlers. It is not surprising that New Caledonia is referred to as the ‘France of the Pacific’, as fresh pastries, French cuisine and language are abundant throughout the country, while local dialects and traditions (such as the Caldoche cowboy) still thrive in the regional areas.
  • How do I get around New Caledonia?
New Caledonia is a varied landscape encompassing the main island of Grand Terre, the Isle of Pines, and the outer Loyalty Islands. These can be accessed by plane or ferry, and in each of these regions you can hire a vehicle to explore at your own pace. Throughout Noumea and the main island there is a more extensive network of local buses and taxis, and the city centre even has a 'Tchou Tchou Train' that visits tourist hotspots.
  • What is the weather like in New Caledonia?
The southern summer is New Caledonia's hottest season, from December to March, with temperatures reaching over 30 degrees regularly. The cooler months of June to September reach averages of up to 25 degrees Celsius. If you're looking for an ideal mix of temperature and fine weather then consider the Caledonian spring in October/November for minimal rainfall, sunny days and slowly rising temperatures.
  • What languages are spoken there?
French is the official language of New Caledonia, though Noumea and the tourist hubs are well-educated and fluent in English. There are also around 30 local 'Kanak' languages too!
