New Caledonia Travel Tips
When to Visit
The best time to visit New Caledonia is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During this period, you'll experience pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the islands. However, if you're a keen diver, consider visiting between September and November for the clearest waters and excellent visibility.
Language
Bonjour from the Pacific! French is the official language here, thanks to New Cal’s colonial history. But the islands are also home to over 30 Indigenous Kanak languages, each with its own rhythm and roots. A paradise where cultures (and languages) collide beautifully.
Time Zone
Bonjour from paradise! New Caledonia runs on UTC+11, keeping it one hour ahead of Brisbane year round, and 2 hours ahead of Sydney during daylight savings time.
With French flair and South Pacific vibes, this island escape blends European elegance with tropical ease—just enough of a time shift to feel far away, yet close enough for a long weekend!
Currency
The currency used in New Caledonia is the French Pacific Franc (XPF). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments and local markets. New Caledonia is known for being relatively expensive compared to other South Pacific destinations due to its French influence for activities and dining out. If you choose to eat like a local it’s much more affordable (French baguettes are the equivalent of AU$1.70, ham sandwich AU$6, coffee $AU$5) so holidaying with a budget is definitely possible.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended for all travellers to New Caledonia.
When researching travel insurance options, ensure your policy covers medical expenses, including emergency evacuation, as well as trip cancellation, lost luggage and trip interruption. It's essential to confirm coverage for activities like diving, boating or any adventure sports if you plan to participate in during your holiday to New Caledonia.
Electricity
Ah, the French twist! New Caledonia uses European-style Type C and E plugs with 220V voltage. You’ll need an adapter, but it’s a small price for all that French island flair.
