Espiritu Santo

A history better than the books

A visit to Espiritu Santo is a must for anyone who wants to develop a better understanding of the South Pacific’s wartime past but it is also home to some of the most breathtaking beaches, caves, natural springs, waterfalls and dive sites in the Pacific. Famous for its WW2 relics, visitors to Espiritu Santo can travel back in time both above and below the water.

The largest of Vanuatu’s 80 Islands, Santo is home to a number of shipwrecks and museums reflecting the strategic role the region played in the Second World War, the most famous of which is the wreckage of SS President Coolidge – a luxury liner that was converted into a warship; now one of the world’s most largest and most accessible shipwrecks.

Another highlight of Espiritu Santo is the Millennium Cave, a cave 50 metres high, decorated with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. The island is quiet and cultural, with a deserving reputation as a beach paradise. It’s possible to fly directly into Santo from Brisbane and Sydney, or the island is a 45 minute flight from Port Vila.
