Discover Vanuatu

When visiting the island nation of Vanuatu, it's easy to see why the people here are regarded as some of the happiest in the world. Made up of more than 80 islands, this Melanesian archipelago is a melting pot of traditional tribal cultures and modern influences, striking the perfect balance to create the Ni-Vanuatu way of life making it a perfect choice for travellers of all kinds.

After gaining independence in 1980, Vanuatu has developed a strong and proud identity while hosting thousands of visitors from around the world every year. Despite this popularity, many Islands remain virtually unsoiled by outside influences, maintaining their natural beauty and rich cultural values.

The natural wonders, from volcanoes and jungles to blue holes and waterfalls, have been inspiring people for centuries. Famous explorers like Captain James Cook, along with soldiers, missionaries, authors including James A. Michener and even TV producers have all discovered the magic of these ancient islands.

Vanuatu has something for everyone. For romantics, adventurers, and families alike, Vanuatu offers an unforgettable experience.
Couples seeking a romantic escape, Vanuatu offers plenty of stunning beaches, luxurious resorts, and intimate settings. The perfect place to relax and reconnect can be found here. Enjoy candlelit dinners on the beach, explore the lush landscapes together, or take a private boat ride through crystal-clear waters. The islands offer a tranquil atmosphere, allowing couples to unwind in paradise, while the warm hospitality and breathtaking sunsets create unforgettable moments to cherish forever.

Families love Vanuatu as it offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences. Families can enjoy safe, shallow lagoons for snorkeling, explore lush rainforests, and visit traditional Melanesian villages to learn about local customs. The islands' peaceful atmosphere and family-friendly resorts provide a comfortable and welcoming environment, while activities like wildlife watching, kayaking, and visiting waterfalls keep children of all ages engaged and excited.

For history buffs, Vanuatu also holds significant historical importance due to its role during World War II. The islands were a strategic military base for Allied forces, particularly the Americans, who built airstrips, military camps, and supply depots. Visitors can explore remnants of this wartime history, such as old military bunkers, abandoned airfields, and museums dedicated to the war effort. One of the most notable sites is the "Million Dollar Point," where American forces dumped vast quantities of equipment into the sea after the war, creating an incredible underwater site for divers to explore. This unique blend of historical sites and natural beauty adds a fascinating layer to Vanuatu’s appeal, providing a memorable experience for history enthusiasts.

For the more adventurous, the world-famous Mount Yasur, one of the most accessible active volcanoes, delivers an exhilarating experience, allowing you to witness lava bursts and hear the rumble of the earth. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, Vanuatu has something for everyone. Visitors to Vanuatu are always welcomed with open arms.

Frequently asked questions about travelling to Vanuatu

Here are some common questions to assist you in the planning of your upcoming holiday

  • What is the culture of Vanuatu?
In a culture that thrived without a written language, Vanuatu’s indigenous ‘Ni-Van’ have always relied on song, dance, and storytelling to keep their 'kastom' alive with village life still embracing the importance of family, community, and tradition.
  • How do I get around Vanuatu?
Tour and transport companies are the most popular travel option when arriving into Port Vila. Taxis are also readily available, although can be more expensive. Vistors can also try out the local b-bus system to zip around. It’s not a scheduled public transport network with a timetable, but privately owned vehicles that run operate in the main town area as required. Think of it as an island-style Uber! B number plates indicate buses and T number plates are for taxis, so just find the mode of transport you want and flag it down.
  • What is the weather like in Vanuatu?
A sub-tropical climate means blue skies and mild temperatures are the year round forecast in Vanuatu, although November to March can see higher temperatures, humidity and rainfall. The summer months are also part of tropical cyclone season, however the southerly location of the majority of resorts means they are less likely to be effected by extreme weather conditions.
  • What languages are spoken there?
In Vanuatu there are three official languages, and English is one of them. French is also widely spoken as is Bislama, a creole language that evolved from Pidgin.
