Vanuatu Travel Tips

When to Visit

The drier and cooler months occur during the Southern Hemisphere winter, May to October.

This favourable season is extremely popular during Australian school holidays so plan in advance or be mindful of date flexibility when booking.

Though generally wetter during the summer months, Vanuatu is also warmer over this time with an average 29 degrees (but take into account the humidity!).

Language

Talk about multilingual! Vanuatu has three official languages—English, French, and Bislama. Bislama, a fun and funky creole with English roots, is the real voice of the islands. Add over 100 Indigenous languages and you’ve got one of the most linguistically rich nations on Earth!

Time Zone

Living large on island time at UTC+11, Vanuatu falls to the same time as Sydney during Daylight Saving time and just one hour ahead of Brisbane year-round!
It may be just an hour, but Vanuatu is a world away in spirit.

Think volcanoes, waterfalls, hikes, boundless adventure and a vibrant island culture. Visit Vanuatu to see it all unfolding just a tick or two ahead of your daily grind.

You'll feel a world away without the jetlag!

Currency

The official currency of Vanuatu is the Vatu (VUV) where AU$1 is the equivalent of around VUV80. While Australian dollars are accepted in some establishments, it's advisable to exchange currency upon arrival for convenience. The markets and many local businesses prefer to work in Vatu so have some cash ready to go. ATM’s and eftpos are also available at some larger establishments and in town.

Vanuatu can cater to a range of budgets, with options ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses and local eateries to luxurious resorts and fine dining restaurants. Prices for tourist activities and dining out can vary, but overall, Vanuatu offers good value for money compared to some other South Pacific destinations.

Travel Insurance

While travel insurance is not mandatory for visiting Vanuatu, it is always strongly recommended.
Comprehensive Travel Insurance may provide coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unforeseen circumstances.
When researching your options for Travel Insurance for your Vanuatu holiday, it is advised to make sure your policy includes coverage for any specific adventurous activities you plan to undertake, such as diving, 4WDing, boating, or any other adventurous activities that may have some danger associated.

Electricity

Plug in and chill—Vanuatu uses the same Type I plug and 230V voltage combo as Australia. Your devices will love it almost as much as you’ll love the view.

How to get there

Direct flights to the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila are available from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with flight durations ranging from approximately 2.5 to 4 hours.
International flights from Brisbane can also fly direct into Espiritu Santo for a convenient outer island stay.

The ideal duration of your stay in Vanuatu depends on your interests and itinerary.
While a week can provide a satisfying taste of the island's beauty and culture, those seeking a more immersive experience may opt for a longer stay of 10 days to two weeks to explore beyond Port Vila and the main island of Efate, and into Espiritu Santo, Tanna, or beyond.

Entry Requirements

Australian citizens planning to visit Vanuatu for tourist purposes do not require a visa for stays of up to 30 days. However, a valid passport with at least six months validity beyond the intended period of stay is necessary.

It's always wise to check entry requirements before departure, as they may be subject to change.
