Best time to visit the Islands of Tahiti

Published 10th Apr 2024

Tahiti’s isles have called to daydreaming travellers for decades, often being deemed as the ideal getaway for honeymoons, celebration vacations, and ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ trips. Many visitors spend hours poring over details like where to stay and where to eat, but it’s just as important to consider WHEN you will be visiting Tahiti, and how this may impact your experience in the islands. Read on below to work out when is the most suitable time for your stay, and then check out our packages to see what’s on offer.

For the best chance at perfect weather?

Tahiti offers a tropical climate synonymous with South Pacific islands, where temperatures are balmy and warm year-round. The dry season, however, is known to offer the best beachgoing weather with a reduced chance of rain. This dry season is from May to October and gives visitors the best chance of postcard-perfect photo ops!

Our Top Tip: Book early! Because the weather is incredibly stunning from May-October it is a drawcard for travellers from the Northern and Southern hemispheres, meaning availability can be hard to come by if you don’t book in advance.

To avoid the crowds…

May to October is the most popular season for visitors, which means there are more guests bustling around the resorts and prices are higher. To avoid the mass crowds but still aim for good weather, we recommend travelling to the Tahitian islands just to the side of the busy season. This would make staying https://spacificatravel.com/destination/fiji during March or April best for your needs. And the bonus is that resorts usually offer discounts to travel then too!

For events and festivals?

Did you know that Tahiti and her outer islands are home to some incredible sporting and cultural events each year? It’s the perfect bonus to your holiday to Tahiti and a great drawcard to plan your stay around. We love:

  • Hawaiki Nui Va’a – Polynesian outrigger canoe race at the end of October
  • Tahiti Pearl Regatta – a May gathering of vessels in the lagoons of the Leeward Islands (varies each year) for a 4 day yacht race and cultural celebration
  • Tahiti Pro – the world-famous surf competition held at Teahupo’o in August
  • Heiva i Tahiti – a Polynesian cultural celebration of music, art, dance and song held across the first two weeks of July

For the food?

The months of December and January are known for being the rainy season across the Pacific, and Tahiti is no exception. But there is a HUGE added benefit to visiting then – the food! Tahiti and her islands produce incredible fresh fruit and vegetables such as banana, mango, coconut, taro, and more. These delicious morsels ripen and grow abundant during the summer rain months, ready for you to munch on. It’s also the prime fishing season for species like Marlin too!
