Fiji as a holiday destination offers something for everyone – a heart-warming culture, vibrant smiles, pristine beaches and exquisite marine life. But beating below the surface, like an undeniable heartbeat, is the adventurous spirit that draws thousands of Aussies each year. From swimming in caves to swimming with sharks, from speeding along water to being showered in it from above, there are some amazing experiences on offer for those who like a bit of adrenalin thrown in for good measure. Keep reading below for our recommendations on some adventurous fun for your Fiji getaway!
White Water Rafting
With a mountainous interior it is little wonder that Viti Levu is home to some great white water rafting, particularly in the Pacific Harbour region. The tributaries of the Navua River offer grade II and III rapids that slice through chasm’s and canyons making for a tropical wilderness that needs to be seen to be believed. Some breathtaking scenery and the opportunity to get the heart rate up? We’re keen!
The Sawa-I-Lau Caves in the Yasawa Islands are iconic, and a true ‘bucket list’ experience for anyone visiting the Blue Lagoon. It is the drawcard of light filtering in from above, illuminating the crystal blue water and limestone formations around that have been carved by running water, that gain the attention of travellers the world over. For those looking for the ‘adrenalin raiser’ here it is the optional second cavern you can explore – which you enter via a secret underwater tunnel. Cool, right?!
We know what you’re thinking, that jet boating is found on just about every body of water these days so what’s so special about jet-boating in Fiji? What if we told you that in Sigatoka, on the Coral Coast, you can combine a jet-boat river tour with an authentic village visit and REALLY tick the holiday boxes? A great day out for the whole family!
In the north of Fiji the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni are home to some of the most magnificent and untouched waterfalls. Plummeting deep into the rock pools below, the waterfalls in this region are perfect for exploring – particularly in the rainy season when the waters are at their peak. It is a way to get the heart moving with a bit of a hike and the incredible feeling of taking a swim at the base of a waterfall that few people will ever see. Sounds dreamy to us!
While not for the faint of heart, this is an experience that only the truly courageous travellers will try. Beqa Lagoon in Southern Fiji is home to the famous Beqa Lagoon Shark Dive, where you can dive to the depths with up to 8 species of shark including the occasional Tiger Shark. This experience is to leave you with lasting memories – and as you’re diving in a dedicated Marine Park you can be sure your tourism dollars are protecting these beautiful animals and their home for future generations as well.
The newest zipline in Fiji is located just outside of Nadi with an enormous 5 kilometres of lines weaving through tropical canyons and mountaintops, past caves with views to the ocean. Getting an adrenalin hit AND exploring the local ecosystems AND insta-worthy views? Where do we sign up?!
