Discover The Solomon Islands

Hundreds of golden treasures ripe for discovery. When the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña came across the Solomon Islands in the 16th century, he believed the islands were the location of biblical King Solomon’s gold; the gold he used to build the Temple of Jerusalem. The modest amounts of gold found along Mataniko River were not enough to warrant much excitement, but were indeed a sample of the archipelago’s vast richness.

More than a tropical holiday destination, the Solomon Islands offer modern day comforts, rare beauty and exotic adventures remaining off the well-worn tourist trail.
In just a few hours from Australia’s east coast, the untapped potential of the Solomons awaits, with its ancient human stories, wild and wonderful natural world, and intriguing contemporary history.

With 992 islands and atolls, the archipelago boasts natural, cultural and geographical diversity: a perfect combination for eco-tourists and adventurers, while also ideal for relaxation seekers and romantics. The islands offer ample space from crowds, unexploited experiences, and the opportunity to explore the range and depth of Pacific Island culture.
From incredible collections of WWII memorabilia to mangrove crocodiles, lush emerald forests and vast lagoons, the Solomon Islands offer an unforgettable experience.

Historically, the Solomon Islands have been home to Melanesian peoples for thousands of years. Ancient archaeological sites reveal complex societies that thrived long before European contact. The islands were first sighted by Europeans in 1568, when Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña named them after the biblical King Solomon, believing them to be rich in gold. In the 20th century, the Solomon Islands gained strategic prominence during World War II, most famously in the fierce battles of Guadalcanal. Today, remnants of this turbulent past - sunken warships, rusted tanks, and forgotten airstrips can be found dotting the landscape, offering poignant insights and incredible dive sites.

The people of the Solomons are known for their warm hospitality and rich cultural traditions. Over 70 distinct languages are spoken across the islands, a testament to the region’s incredible ethnic and linguistic diversity. Village life remains central to many communities, where custom, or kastom, continues to play a powerful role. Visitors are often welcomed into villages with traditional songs, dances, and feasts, creating deeply personal and authentic travel experiences.

Accessibility to the Solomon Islands has improved significantly in recent years. Direct flights operate from Brisbane to the capital, Honiara, and inter-island travel is supported by domestic airlines and ferries. While infrastructure is more rustic compared to mainstream destinations, this only adds to the charm and authenticity of the Solomon Islands. Here, you’ll find boutique eco-lodges, locally run dive resorts, and community-based accommodations that connect you directly to the land and its people.

Find yourself in a place to disconnect from the fast pace of modern life and reconnect with nature and culture. For those seeking something truly different, the Solomon Islands aren’t just a destination - they’re a revelation.
