An Insider’s Guide to Norfolk Island

Published 15th Mar 2022

A comprehensive guide to Norfolk Island is often the best place to start when planning your next trip to this small island off the east coast of mainland Australia. That’s because even if you have been to Norfolk Island before, there are still so many hidden treasures on this beautiful island just waiting to be discovered.

At Spacifica Travel, we have been fortunate enough to have spent a fair bit of time on Norfolk Island. Across those visits, we can definitely confirm that this bucket list destination has a few hidden gems that make it all that more special. So here is our guide to the must-do activities for your Norfolk Island holiday.

Sunrise

Whether you are a morning person or not, we highly recommend reserving just one morning to get up early, make yourself a coffee before leaving your accommodation, and head out to Captain Cooks Memorial. Here, you will witness one of the most glorious sunrises you will ever see in your life.

There really is something magical about sitting on the edge of the world, waiting for the new day to break over the horizon. The way the sun slowly reveals the silhouettes of the rock formations and island below is nothing short of breathtaking.

Depending on the time of year that you are travelling, first light can break from as early as 5 am, through to as late as 6.30 am. So, be sure to jump online the night before and find out what time the magic begins.

Dining options

After you have watched the sunrise, you may be ready for another coffee and a nice cooked breakfast. There are some great dining options on the island, and you will likely have a chance to try out quite a few.

One of our favourites is the Golden Orb. This beautiful, homestyle café is located on Taylors Road, opposite the Norfolk Island Information Centre. Tucked away in lush gardens, you may not even realise it is there unless you happen to walk past, but that is what makes it all that more special.

If you are looking for a nice casual and easy dinner, Castaway Norfolk Island have a fantastic woodfire pizza night every Friday, held on their sunset deck. This is often accompanied by local entertainment and is not a night to be missed. Make sure you call ahead and book your table, so you do not miss out!

Nature

For those of you who like to immerse yourself in nature, you will find a variety of walking tracks through the National Park. At the start of each walking track, there is a sign that tells you a bit about the route, as well as the fitness level that it’s suited best for. We particularly love the route to Bird Rock, which is a bird lovers paradise!

If walking is not quite for you however, there are some beautiful park areas throughout the island that you can take a packed picnic to, and just sit and enjoy your surroundings.

Nights Sky

City folk don’t often get to see the wide-open night sky like you do at Norfolk Island. With no light pollution, and no city fumes, holidays on Norfolk Island have one of the clearest skies we have ever seen.

You can enjoy this anywhere, whether you take a picnic blanket and lay out of the grass in front of your room, or you make your way to Mt Pitt after dark. It sounds simple, but how often do we forget to stop and appreciate the small things in life? Do yourself the favour of looking up and taking in the millions of stars sparkling back at you – we promise you will not regret it!

Our Guide to Norfolk Island – FAQs

Here are some handy hints and tips for your next Norfolk Island travel experience.

Can I take my own food over?

The answer is yes! You can take non-perishable items with you to the island. So, if you cannot live without your favourite coffee, make sure you pack some to take with you. This is also great for travellers with special dietary requirements, and making sure you have some of those harder-to-find items on hand for your arrival.

How do I get my car?

For the majority of our clients, you will be met at the airport and transferred by coach to your accommodation. Your car will be waiting and ready for you at your accommodation. Your keys will be with the check in staff for the hotel, or located in the car for you ready to go.

Inside your car will be a map and this will have a time slot for you to make your way to the Crest Auto office to complete your paperwork. Typically, this is that afternoon or the next day. From there, you are free to cover as little or as much of the island as your heart desires. Just make sure give the Norfolk wave, and give way to the cows!

Will my phone work on Norfolk Island?

Unfortunately, not without global roaming at this stage. Norfolk Island has their own local carrier. Do check in with your service provider and see what their roaming charges are for Norfolk Island before you depart. Make sure your family members know where you are staying so they can contact you if need be. Alternatively, you can purchase a local sim card from the local supermarket.
