Top Reasons to Visit Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island:
COVID-19:
Our health & safety has been at the forefront of our minds during this current climate. Both Norfolk and Lord Howe accommodation providers have put in place hygienic practises as per Australian Government regulations. At the time of writing this, neither island have active cases of COVID-19.
HEALTH & WELLNESS:
The islands have always had their own unique blend of healing powers. Your mind will be calmed as soon as you touch down on Norfolk Island as you relax into island-paced living. The rich history is also fascinating, with plenty of museums and historical sites to visit that will certainly stimulate your post-isolation brain! Lord Howe also boasts a thought-provoking museum promoting conservation projects. Attending an Ian Hutton Nature Lecture is also a must-do during your stay where you can learn more about Lord Howe’s endemic flora and fauna.
Enjoy the challenge of an early morning hike up Mount Gower on Lord Howe Island or perhaps an early morning yoga session at Flagstaff lookout on Norfolk Island. Afterwards, refuel with freshly made food that is truly a treat for the senses. Norfolk Island has locally made liqueurs, honeys and cheeses. We recommend a visit to the Sunday morning markets located near the visitor centre to discover all of Norfolk’s amazing produce. Due to Lord Howe Island being a world heritage site, there’s not much that can be grown at a sustainable level. As such, while you’ll still be treated to amazing wining and dining everywhere you go, the majority of the food that you consume is actually flown in from New South Wales.
Nothing lifts the spirits like taking in fresh sea breezes and surrounding yourself with natural beauty. Lord Howe Island restricts tourist numbers to 400 at any given time in an effort to preserve the islands delicate biodiversity which has earned it a World Heritage status. This creates a feeling of intimacy and connectedness to nature that you won’t find in high volume tourist destinations. Similarly, Norfolk Island is only 5km x 8km, but rest assured there’s plenty of quiet locations to just to sit and soak up the view.
Sometimes a simple walk along the beach is all that’s needed to soothe the soul. Norfolk Island has hidden coves, beaches and troves of nature everywhere you turn. Among our favourites are Emily Bay and the secluded Anson Bay, both spectacular beaches suited to families and surfers, respectively. Lord Howe Island also hosts a range of beautiful white sand beaches. We recommend Neds Beach for families and barbeques, as its calm waters host a beautiful array of different fish to feed, including Mullet, Kingfish, Emperor and Silver-Drummers. Blinky Beach is every surfer’s and kite-surfer’s dream and locals have dubbed the experience “Champagne Surf”. Or head to North Bay, a secluded beach accessible only by foot or water, where you can watch migratory seabirds and find some amazing snorkelling exploring the wreck of the “Favourite”.
NEW CONNECTIONS:
If the lockdown period has you yearning to socialise, you’ll be sure to find like-minded travellers and perhaps life-long friends at one of the many Norfolk Island tours - another reason why the island is so popular for solo travellers!
Be sure to check out the community notice board while on Lord Howe Island as you can connect with the locals by finding out what’s happening on-island during your stay!
SAFETY:
The islands are both incredibly safe! It’s quite common for doors to be left unlocked as there is no crime rate. Norfolk Island is also free from snakes, traffic (the one roundabout is a bit of a novelty!) or light pollution. The island also boasts a Dark Sky status so star-gazing here is truly breath-taking. Lord Howe Island is also free from snakes, sand flies and stingers. The preferred method of transport is walking or pedal power, so definitely no traffic problems there either or exhaust fumes to breathe in!
BACK TO BUSINESS:
Although there are travel restrictions still in place, both islands are eagerly awaiting your return! Restaurants on Norfolk Island have re-opened and are ready to tempt your tastebuds. There are many Lord Howe Island properties that have undergone renovations so they are looking refreshed and revamped ready for a busy summer season.
For keen travellers there’s still time to visit both islands before the end of 2020 so you don’t have to feel like you’ve completely missed out on holidays this year! Plus, we’ve introduced new flexi-deals to Norfolk Island so you can cancel anytime you want without fees or change dates without fees (terms & conditions apply, see flexi-deals packages for more info).
