Discovering Paradise Together: Multi-generational Travel to the South Pacific

Published 10th Nov 2023

The South Pacific is a region of unparalleled natural beauty, lush green landscapes, crystal clear waters and vibrant marine life. This tropical paradise is not only a dream destination for honeymooners and adventure seekers but also a fantastic place for multi-generational travel. Holidaying in the South Pacific with multiple generations of a family offers a unique and enriching experience that brings a family closer together, and fosters learning and memories that will last a lifetime.

How to plan a multi-generational holiday?

Here are our tips for planning a successful and unforgettable holiday;

  • Choose Accommodations Wisely: Opt for family-friendly resorts that offer activities and amenities catering to various age groups. Look for properties with interconnected rooms or villas to accommodate larger families.
  • Plan Age-Appropriate Activities: Ensure that your itinerary includes activities suitable for all age groups. This could include family-friendly excursions, nature walks, or visits to cultural centres.
  • Involve Everyone in the Planning Process: Include all family members in the decision-making process to ensure that everyone's interests and preferences are considered.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that everyone may have different energy levels and interests. Be flexible and allow family members to choose their activities and downtime as needed.
  • Create Special Moments: Plan activities or outings that allow family members to bond. Whether it's a sunset beach picnic or a group snorkelling adventure, these shared experiences will create lasting memories.
  • Travel During the Off-Season: To avoid overcrowding and high prices, consider travelling during the South Pacific's shoulder or off-season. This can also make it easier to secure accommodations and activities.
  • Be mindful of health, safety and accessibility: Ensure that all family members are physically prepared for the journey and have access to any necessary medications. Be aware of the region's health precautions and requirements. Our experts can help you select accommodation to suit any accessibility requirements.

So what are our top accommodation picks?

Fiji is known for being family-friendly and most resorts offer babysitting services, but our pick is Nanuku Resort Fiji. The resort can join some of its residences together meaning multi-gen families can have their own space but still holiday together. Their Two Bedroom Beachfront Duplex Pool Villa is great for guests travelling with three or more adults, for singles or couples with or without children or those who may need ground floor or disabled access.

In the Cook Islands there are lots of villa options across the islands, but our pick would be either Pacific Resort Rarotonga or Pacific Resort Aitutaki, these luxury accommodations suits all ages, they have multiple places to eat, lots of activities and are safe for kids to run free and play.

In Tahiti we recommend Te Moana Tahiti Resort, which has a wide variety of room categories available from hotel-style rooms to self-contained studios and apartments with kitchenettes and they cater to a lot of multi-generational family groups travelling together.

In Samoa our experts would recommend Return to Paradise Resort & Spa. This locally owned, family-friendly, beachfront resort offers a total of 115 rooms in a garden or beach setting and for larger groups or families there are 2 and 3-bedroom self-contained spacious villas offering you an island “home away from home.” Mother Nature provides the perfect playground to explore and the locals showcase their eclectic culture beautifully. The perfect setting to create wonderful, new memories!

Our top pick in Vanuatu would be Iririki Island Resort & Spa, which has contemporary self-contained rooms and apartments, numerous leisure and dining options, a casino, complimentary non-motorised water sports and a Kids Club. Iririki uniquely offers a private island experience with a perfect balance between peaceful seclusion and convenience. Just a short 3-minute ferry ride to mainland Port Vila and you have an array of eateries, markets and shopping to keep the family amused. The ferry operates 24 hours a day which is super handy for the party animals in the group or the youngest (and oldest!) members who enjoy a daytime siesta when the itinerary gets too hectic.

Norfolk Island is a super safe option for families and offers a unique heritage house stay at Christian’s of Bucks Point. The 3-bedroom cottage accommodates up to 6 people and you’ll have the entire property exclusively to your group. The fully equipped kitchen provides the comforts of home, and the claw-foot bathtub is great for bathing the littlies or a relaxing soak after they’ve gone to bed. There’s also a  big backyard for the kids to explore and fruit trees to pick when in season.

That’s just a snapshot of options in the South Pacific, our friendly team can help you plan and book your holiday or give recommendations on other destinations such as Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia, The Soloman Islands, Niue, Pitcairn Island and Tonga.
