Norfolk Island may be small – about 8km long and 5km wide – but it’s mighty when it comes to things to see and do.
Don’t let its size fool you into thinking you won’t need a car to tour the island – Norfolk’s network of roads criss-crosses the island and it takes at least three hours to drive around. In fact, you’ll need at least a day or two to explore the country roads and take in the scenic lookouts, beaches and attractions along the way.
Why car hire is essential on Norfolk Island
Formed by volcanic activity more than two million years ago, Norfolk Island is a rugged landscape of hills and valleys. Today, more than 120km of roads wind across the island, but with no buses or Uber, having your own car is essential to experience everything Norfolk has to offer.
With your own wheels, you’re free to explore at your own pace. Start your journey at the Visitor Information Centre, where you can pick up a road map and all the local tips you need to ensure you don’t miss a thing.
All Spacifica Travel packages include car hire
Hiring a car is easy, and a standard inclusion in Spacifica Travel’s Norfolk Island holiday packages. Every Norfolk Island package includes return flights, accommodation and car hire for the duration of your stay, so all you have to do is get to the airport and let the Spacifica Travel team handle the rest.
The team works with trusted local providers to create a seamless itinerary, whether you’re staying in a resort, cottage, villa or boutique hotel. However you decide to experience Norfolk Island, a car is part of the package. Norfolk Island accommodation with car hire is like the island’s wine and cheese – they’re better together!
Types of vehicles available
Norfolk has vehicles to suit all needs, including automatic sedans, hatchbacks, small SUV's and larger mini vans for families and groups. You don’t need a 4WD to explore, and accessible vehicles are available for less mobile travellers. Vehicles are fuel efficient and easy to drive – the only requirement is that you practice The Norfolk Wave at passing cars.
While there are no traffic jams as such, you have to look out for the local cows that like to cross the road at their leisure. On Norfolk, all livestock – cows, chooks, roosters and ducks – have right of way, so be patient and enjoy one of the many unique experiences on offer.
Alternative transport options (and why they’re not ideal)
- Public transport
Norfolk Island doesn’t have a bus or shuttle service, nor rideshare apps like Uber. There are a small number of local taxis, but you’ll need to prebook to guarantee availability.
- Walking & cycling
If you’re based in the town centre, some short distances are walkable, however the hilly terrain outside of this isn’t suitable for long distance trekking. Footpaths are also limited outside of town. If you are up to the challenge and would prefer to see the island on two wheels, push bikes – including e-bikes – are available for hire.
- Motorbikes & scooters
Norfolk Island is unique among its South Pacific neighbours in that motorbikes and scooters aren’t commonly used by tourists. Recommended only for experience riders, helmets are required, and you must be licensed.
