Where is Norfolk Island?

In the South Pacific, only a 2 and a half hour direct flight north-east from Sydney, or south-east from Brisbane.

Who flies to Norfolk Island?

Qantas flies 3 times a week out of Sydney and Brisbane airports each. Flights to Norfolk Island depart from the international terminals in Brisbane and Sydney.

So if flights leave from the international airport do I need my passport?

Nope! A passport is not required when flying from the Australian mainland to Norfolk Island (although if you have one, we do encourage taking it). All you need is a valid photo ID, like your driver licence.

What currency is used on Norfolk Island?

The Australian dollar is used, so no money conversion needed. How easy is that!

Major credit cards are accepted everywhere and you can withdraw cash from the ATM at the Commonwealth Bank, or Australia Post.

What's the weather like?

The climate is subtropical. Temperatures range between 19-28°C in summer, and 12-19°C in winter.

When is the best time to travel?

You really can't go wrong when planning a travel date for your Norfolk Island holiday. There's great weather and events year-round. The water temperature is a consistent 19-22°C all year long - perfect for swimming!

If you're set on travelling during the warmer months there's one thing I'd recommend – book early! Accommodation during this period fills up fast and easy. Don't discredit a holiday to Norfolk Island in winter though, we see some unbelievable specials for travel during winter, trust me! Or see for yourself and visit our Norfolk Island packaged holiday deals.

Where should you stay?

There's accommodation suited for everyone's Norfolk Island holiday. Check out our range of hotels, self-contained apartments, cottages and holiday homes.

Do you need a hire car?

Absolutely! I wouldn't let you book one of our Norfolk Island holiday packages without one. This island looks small, only 8km x 5km, but roads are winding and hilly. Having a hire car at your disposal allows you to get the most out of your holiday.

What do you need to know about driving on Norfolk Island?

Here’s some helpful tips:

  • Cars drive on the left side of the road
  • Be mindful of the speed limit, the maximum speed is 50km, but in some areas it's 30km or 40km
  • Cows have right of way, so be sure to slow down and let them be on their way
  • Drive like a local and give a friendly 'Norfolk wave' to passing cars or pedestrians

Will your mobile phone work?

No, your Australian mobile phone plan won't work. To stay in touch with friends or family while away you'll need to purchase a visitor sim card or visit places that offer free Wi-Fi, the Visitor Centre Burnt Pine township will be able to guide you in the right direction.

What is the language?

English is the main language, but you might hear the locals speaking the "Norf'k laengwij" a mix of Tahitian and Old English inherited from the Bounty Mutiny descendants.

Here’s some phrases to help you sound like a local:

  • Watawieh = Hello
  • Ai guud thaenks = I'm well thank you
  • Thaenks f aklan = Thanks for us

What’s the time zone?

GMT+11. Norfolk is 1 hour ahead of Australia Eastern Standard Time. Daylight Saving, when the clocks move 1 hour ahead, starts on the first Sunday in October and ends on the first Sunday of April.
