Norfolk Island Insider Tips

Published 2nd Jul 2020

Whether you are a first time traveller, or a returning guest, these insider tips are designed to help you make the most of your time on the little slice of paradise we call Norfolk Island.

Smooth Landing!

The views as you approach Norfolk Island are stunning! Request a window seat and have your camera handy as you approach the Island. The fire crew will be eagerly awaiting your arrival on the runway with a display board showing a difficulty rating and an overall landing score out of 10 for the pilot!

Picnic at Puppy's Point

Be sure to visit Slick & Sons, located directly across from the airport, and a Norfolk icon. This cute butcher/delicatessen stocks many of the gourmet goodies that you would normally find on the mainland, along with a range of locally grown organic fruits and vegetables. Live like a local and eat only what is in season- we promise you it will taste out of this world. Pack a picnic with your supplies and head to Puppy’s Point to capture the sunset.

Roadside Quirks

A hire car is a must to explore Norfolk Island. As you drive along keep an eye out for the roadside stalls to find fresh produce, eggs, homemade jams (try the local guava jelly!) and loads more. Be sure to have some change with you and just pop your money into the honesty box. The Visitors Information Centre can provide you with a map showing all the stalls.

Weekend Morning Markets

Mingle with the locals and get a feel for the friendly Norfolk community. The produce markets are held every Saturday, and the Arts and Crafts markets are on a Sunday. Try and schedule your flights for a weekday so that you can visit both!

Wednesday Morning Weaving

A stop into the Golden Orb Café on a Wednesday morning is highly recommended. Local plaiters meet here for a weave and a chat and will be happy to give you a demonstration. This warm and inviting café sells a selection of delicious homemade treats, along with a range of local books, cards and bookmarks. You can sit outside under the avocado tree at your own risk- a helmet is provided when the avos are in season!

Pre-Book Your Tours

Many Norfolk Island tours only operate on certain days of the week and are limited to a maximum number of guests. It pays to be organised and pre-book these ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Many groups travel to Norfolk Island so these can sell out well in advance! View some of our most popular tours here.

Plan Your Dates

If you want to fully immerse yourself in the local culture, time your holiday to Norfolk Island to coincide with one of the local annual events! Perhaps join the locals and celebrate Bounty Day in June as they re-enact the landing of their forefathers on Norfolk Island. Follow the procession of the Bounty Mutineers descendants in period costume and enjoy a delicious picnic with your new-found friends.

Norfolk Island is one of the few places outside of America to celebrate Thanksgiving Day in November, a legacy from the American whaling ships who would make frequent stops to the island during the late 1800's. The Taste Norfolk Island Food Festival is held during the same week.

To help you start planning your getaway we have a number of Norfolk Island holiday packages you might enjoy. Otherwise our team of Norfolk Island specialists are available on 1800 800 722 or live chat to tailor a stay to suit your needs.
